Governor being petty while important matters ignored- Edmund G. Maduro
It was on May 24, 2016 that this news site reported that Governor Duncan had misinformed a BVI Beacon Reporter that we had misquoted him on his comments about the status of Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) Claude O. Skelton Cline back in April.
In fact, Mr Duncan told the Beacon Reporter, “I think that even though you’re a newsman, you shouldn’t believe everything you read in the papers. What I said to your colleague was the limit to what I’m prepared to say on that matter: That is, the Cabinet considered carefully the recommendation of the board on the renewal of the contract of Mr Skelton-Cline, and took a decision on it. That’s it: The rest is pure conjecture and misquoting. I’d like you to note that. I’ve seen the reports in [Virgin Islands News Online], and they are inaccurate misquotes,” the Governor concluded.
Meanwhile, the BVI Beacon reporter Mr Ken E. Silva confirmed to Virgin Islands News Online that his question to the Governor was specific to the contract renewal issue involving Mr Skelton-Cline.
This news site then uploaded the tape of the interview that Governor Duncan and ZBVI Reporter Zan Lewis did pertaining to the denial of the contract renewal of Mr Skelton-Cline by Cabinet. This showed that we had in no way misquoted Governor Duncan. (See link to article at end of story with radio interview).
Petty Governor?
Speaking on his EGM Show on ZROD 103.7 FM on May 26, 2016, Mr Maduro was furious that Governor Duncan finds it necessary to have a fight with the media while the more important matters of the territory are being ignored.
“We have His Excellency the good Governor. Instead he go and deal with the House of Assembly, deal with the issues that are put to him by the Public Accounts Committee with regards to the Commission of Inquiry [into the Ports Development Project], deal with the people’s business, he is coming here picking up all sorts of little irresponsible arguments with the press as to whether he spoke the truth or whether the press spoke the truth,” Mr Maduro said.
The former Chief Immigration Officer Maduro also said he couldn’t understand how leadership in the Virgin Islands “could fall to such a low level. As far as I am concerned it is disgraceful.”
According to Maduro, there are two sides of Government: The elected representatives and the appointed servants that include the Governor.
“Here you have a man who is a Governor going out there and taking what I would regard as nonsensical arguments with the press. Why do we in these serious times have to have our top leaders dealing with frivolous situations? We have a lot of situations going on around here where our elected representatives in particular think that they are bigger than the people. They wouldn’t realise that they are the people’s servants. We elected them to represent us. The people are the power.”
Meanwhile, Mr Maduro said he was pleased to see that people have been coming to the forefront “one by one” to speak out against matters affecting the territory.
