‘Government hiding criminal elements’ – Edmund Maduro
“Why is our government hiding criminal behaviour…? Administrative officers do things that are wrong and the public Chief Auditor does a lot of investigations and that information belongs to the public,” stated Mr Maduro during his show ‘EDM’ on November 14, 2013.
He stressed that accountability is the most important part of leadership, “Our government must be accountable and transparent. There are a number of issues that were taking place and are still taking place. Some of them are being investigated by our chief auditor,” claimed Mr Maduro.
The talk show host and former Chief Immigration Officer was puzzled that documents he deems public information are not being made available and said he was prepared to demand same from the relevant authorities.
He alluded to the issue of the cruise ship dock stating, “They have so much confusion with the cruise ship dock, for a matter of fact the chief auditor had to do an investigation and up to now you and I can’t get a copy of that investigation, what kind of government do we have?” he asked.
In the words of Mr Maduro, and as was customarily said by the folks of old, “We better be cayta.”
Many residents were anticipating obtaining a copy of the controversial Port Development Audit conducted by Ms Sonia M. Webster, the Virgin Islands’ Auditor General.
However, according to the Order Paper of the Second Sitting of the Third Session of the Second House of Assembly scheduled for today, Tuesday November 19, 2013 it will not be on the agenda.
It would have had to be placed on the table of Parliament by Leader of the Opposition and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE.
Premier and Leader of Government Business, Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith told the media that his Administration never requested an audit report of the cruise pier port development project.
The report, leaked to selective media houses two weeks ago, unearthed alleged corruption, conflict of interest, disregard for the laws of the Virgin Islands, unfair practices, undue influence in favour of one developer and disregard for the established tendering process.
