PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – It was at the silver jubilee graduation ceremony of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) that Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn took to the podium, refreshing the minds of the hundreds gathered of the mudslinging and name calling that occurred in the recently concluded general elections of the Virgin Islands (VI).

The graduation ceremony was held under the ‘big tent’ on the HLSCC campus at Paraquita Bay yesterday June 11, 2015. Almost all the elected members of government and the House of Assembly were noticeably present, including re-elected member of the Opposition Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1).

Dr Karl Dawson, who is currently on leave from the college and had participated in the election as an At Large candidate on the Virgin Islands Party ticket, was also recognised as being in attendance.

‘Gossip became facts’

Hon Walwyn spoke of a number of things of importance to the furtherance of the college and the advancement of students, but also reminded of things that did not go down well with him during the elections.

“We literally just ended the 2015 general elections with the swearing in of your new government just 24 hours ago. As many have lamented, the campaign season was one that was hard on many fronts. Graduates, as learned members of our community, I want to challenge you to raise the level of discourse among ourselves in this community,” said Hon Walwyn.

He further added that he firmly believes it is through fact-based debates and discussions persons have the best chance to bring out the right ideas to really shape a modern VI.

The Education Minister said that throughout the campaign he was surprised at how easily gossip became facts that shaped the decision of who would lead the country. “Men and women, who all go to church with our neighbors and friends, were called many things including demons. But what bothered me the most is that we continue to allow a very small population of individuals to attempt to reshape who we are via the blogs and traitorous electronic messages,” he stated.

“I want to encourage you class of 2015 to be bold and to go out in our communities and make a positive impact by using your voice, your knowledge and your love for this country to declare that the Virgin Islands would not go the way as other countries to callously allow the characters of citizens to be scandalised while the real issues facing this country remain un-ventilated,” he told those present.

Going forward he encouraged the graduates that their energies, in addition to healthy and positive discussion, should play a pivotal role in nation building via private enterprise. “The country has to reverse the concept that all jobs and opportunities must be had in the public sector….As a country we cannot literally afford to do that. We need to encourage more of you, members of the class of 2015, to become entrepreneurs and provide new services to our communities for both private individuals and also for the government.”

He got the most votes which gives him the right to speak about what the hell he wants. It was a message to the young people to stay focused but you all continue to prove his point!

Elections finish a few days ago and we expect people to just pretend as if it didn't happen? Come on man, we saw the level of ignorance and fighting among people. All the man is saying is that we can do better and should do better. Those saying Myron did this and that, trust me, if he wanted to be dirty, he had tons and tons of information to drop on those guys. He asked the opposition to keep off him personally or he would retaliate. They left him alone and he left them alone. This man didn't get the most votes in the history of the BVI by accident, he worked his @$$ off.

there is usually a bit of truth in every rumor. If one person says you have a tail you can dismiss it. But if several people say you have a tail- you better look around...

Assuming that you are referring to parts of the world where democracy prevails,,then your comment would be true if facts and evidence presented were deemed by an appropriate body to constitute the charge.
Regardless , ballots cast by voters in a true Democracy are the final judge and jury.
