ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - After a week of drama that saw his brother staging a one-man protest about his treatment over a request to be medically transported to his homeland of Trinidad & Tobago (T&T), retired educator Gordon Junior Dennis Callender has died.

A good teacher

According to information reaching our news centre, he died sometime this morning at Peebles Hospital, in Road Town, the capital city. He was 68-years-old having been born on July 15, 1950.

The educator taught countless students and had served in many schools in the educational system including, as Principal of the Joyce Samuel Primary School in Belle Vue.  Some of his greatest achievements were while serving as Principal of the biggest Primary School in the Territory, the Althea Scatliffe during 2000-2010, after which he retired.

One man protest

Originally, from T&T it is believed Mr Callender came to the Virgin Islands (VI) as a little boy. He is expected to be buried on Tortola which he considers his adopted home.

Earlier this week, his brother David Callender staged a one-man protest where he alleged that MASA insurance had refused to evacuate his sick brother to Trinidad to be with his family.

MASA side

In a press release, MASA claimed that the transportation was “not medically necessary” and the deceased was “additionally informed that he did not qualify for recuperative transportation under the terms and conditions of the Member Services Agreement, as such recuperative transportations were associated with a member’s return to their residence in the event that they are hospitalised abroad."

MASA via their Director of Compliance further noted, "As Mr Gordon Callender was a Tortola resident and not a Trinidad resident, such recuperative transportation services were not applicable.”

No date for the funeral has been announced.

Mr Callender was one of the nicest humanbeigns you would have want to meet and after all of these years that he served as an educator in this country and took care of all of our children and give them the solid foundation that they needed to have a great future in this world that we live in and for him to go through what he had to go through in this country it’s a crying shame
What have this country come to , when immigration officers are telling employers who ho to the airport to pick up their relief workers not to come back to the airport to pick up their workers because they don’t want Haitians and members from the Dominican Republic and Jamaica to come here to work and they are telling you to get people from Venezuela and the philipenes and the immigration department has now taken over the job of the labor department controlling the the people’s work because they do not want these nationalities in our country it is a crying shame what is going on in this country the governed needs to look into these abuses that are been taking of our people in this country our people does not deserve this to the family of Mr Callender my deepest sympathies and for all the people that are being advantage by the people of this BVI god will take care of you it’s juat a matter of time he will never give you more than you can bear .

This is just so so sad. Life is only to be lived, and Mr. Calendar lived a full life that touched and molded countless of people who are now serving in all capacities of government, medical doctors, attorneys, business owner, teachers, and the list goes on to infinity. His final days should have been more peaceful receiving the love and attention of his family in Trinidad.

Now MASA said yesterday that he was fit to be discharged with proper ambulatory care. The unfortunate proof here now is that he was minutes away from his final day. So I also blame Peebles for not recommending him as a patient fit for airlift. Shame on all of you

He gave so much of himself. When he needed others to do the same they fell short. This is really sad. I hope he receives justice. Justice for the insurance failure. And Justice for the people who robbed him of his dream of living in his own house. Shame on you!!!

Boy it is sad to see another gem lost! Gordon gave so much of himself; he would give his last Yankee dollar to feed some of ayo - and his is how he was treated!!! This is just the tip of he iceberg VI ppl. How have we lost our compassion and willingness to help others in times of need? The current society is all about materialism - we gone to be dogs and worst yet to come. This got me so friggin’ vex that these same ‘ministers’ of the cloth and Government have no moral compass what so all. Their end of life as the most high sees’ fit - will deal with ALL of them! If I was in a position to have helped my fellow man; I would’ve unconditionally. Mark what you got to say now?!?!

Condolences to family loved ones and previous students; myself included! Teacher Callender: I remember the fullness of your voice and the happiness of your laughter and will forever appreciate at least a time in your life when “romance - was much ado about nothing” as you fabulously displayed that “Love” for you was also “larger than life” and that loving was unconditional and a sonnet at a time when learning about Sheakespeare was important; and so as a past student it’s heartbreaking to imagine that you were allegedly abandoned; or your “dress code” which vine of the group Rose Royce which calls to mind the lyrics of “Love Don’t Love Here Anymore” - “Ay, Love don’t Love you, Hey, Love, ah ya, Time rushes on, And it’s not fair When someone you used to love, Is no longer there, But I think it’s time you know, See Love is a Society, Any fool can not belong, Cause the minute you hurt love, Then it’s over and done ...Love is a ride its up and down...The Society observed your romance and it was a local romance the kids “loved” because it was beautiful to see. Love Is thoughtful and kind; the kind of teacher you were. Good Teachers should be thanked and assisted because many of them didn’t just teach they were the social welfare guardian of our community backbin the day and still provide socializing that children in school need because parents can’t always see everything; Teachers are on the front lines mostly than not!

Quite the saddest things ever - missed opportunities can’t always be made up for! America’s “No child Left behind” should be mirrored with campaign Program for Progress - “Turnover A New Leaflet For Teachers ” For there by the grace of God go I and you!

    Rest in Love and Peace

This is such a heartbreaking story. He was a good soul, dedicated to generations of people in this community. All he wanted and needed was to spend his last days surrounded by family. MASA it’s called having compassion. He paid his monies over the years and when he needed your assistance, you hid behind policy and failed a dying man! Shame on you!
