ESTATE BOVONI, St Thomas, USVI- 2016 Governor’s Cup winner Giant Valley of Tortola missed out on victory in the feature race at the Pre-Carnival Horse Races at Clinton E. Phipps Race Track on St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI) on March 12, 2017.

Giant Valley, of Top Priority Stables, gave a spirited run but missed out on the top purse of $7000 in the race for Class A & B horses that went for 7 and a half furlongs, having had to settle for second, behind Totally Evil of Alliance Point Stables.

Winning jockey Victor Santiago brought his horse home in 131.2. Third was I’m Sensational of No Limit Stables, fourth was Integrity of Bovoni Stables and fifth Center Gold of No Nonsense Stables.

Other results

The opening race of the 6-race card also saw a horse from Tortola just coming short of victory. Meddling Birdie of Mission House Stables on Tortola came home second to El Convidado, ridden by Eric Rodriguez.

Race 2, for Class D&E horses over 7 and a half furlongs for a purse of $5,500, belonged to El Indultado, followed by Go Panco Go. Third was Unguided Missile and fourth Sparky Bee.

Race 3, for Class C horses for a purse of $6,000, was taken by Gottcha Blessin, followed by Perfect Sunday and Explosive Image, all horses from St Thomas.

Race 4 belonged to My Song Venezuelan and jockey Eric Rodriguez. Second was Top Class Citizen of Tortola while third was Daddy’s Reason.

The final race of the day, an open race over 7 and a half furlongs for a top purse of $10,000, saw Brass Note of St Croix edge out American Greed of Tortola. Brass Note also tied the track record of 131.2.

Third was Call Daddy.

The races were also held in memory of Mr Ulric A. Shinnery aka Boo, who had a passion for caring and riding horses.

He was also the starter at the Clinton E. Phipps Race Track until 2015.
