ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- “Now, there is another challenge brewing—an active hurricane season—to test the indomitable spirit of the Virgin Islands people,” remarked Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) as he assured the Territory Government is continuing to do its part to ‘Be Ready’ for the Atlantic Hurricane Season which officially began on June 1, 2020, and ends November 30, 2020.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) annual Atlantic hurricane forecast, published Thursday, May 22, 2020, shows an abnormally active season in the coming months.

There have already been 2 named tropical system formed in the Atlantic basin ahead of the start date of the season.

‘Complacency is never an option!’

According to Premier Fahie, in a statement on the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season on June 1, 2020, "as wise people, our foreparents taught us how to be watchful and vigilant, and how to be proactive in protecting our interests when the storms gather.”

He emphasised that complacency was never an option.

“I can assure you the people that your Government will continue to do its part to ‘Be Ready’ for the Atlantic Hurricane Season.”

The Premier said throughout the Public Service, the officers who carry out the day-to-day business of the people have been updating their plans and procedures so that they are prepared to face the multiple hazards that the Territory may encounter, including tropical storms or hurricanes.

Ghut clearing & hurricane shelters

Very importantly, ghuts are being cleared and potential hurricane shelters are being identified.

“The team at the Public Works Department is carrying out ghut clearing.

“Around the Territory, including on the Sister Islands, we are inspecting potential shelters,” Hon Fahie assured.

Premier Fahie also took the time to encourage and remind the private sector businesses that while they operate in this ‘New Regular’ of living and working with COVID-19, that they also remain in a heightened state of preparedness for the upcoming season.

“We will continue to work together as one with BVILOVE, to ensure that activities are well coordinated to help us as a Territory to ‘Be Ready for Anything,’” Hon Fahie said, adding that while the Territory continues to have Faith in the protection of the Heavenly Father, “we know we need to take action to protect our community as well.”

The less violent prisoners out to do the job. That would make up for the free food and shelter they are receiving and save the Government $$$$$.

Hon Premier Andrew A. Fahie(R1), nice motivational talk on disaster preparedness and readiness and remembering the wisdom of our foreparents. However, the ghuts should cleared and cleaned well before the official start of the hurricane season on June 01. Furthermore, Public Works should have a work plan in place to inspect and clean the ghuts on a periodic basis. Further, shelters also should have been identified and inspected before the start of the hurricane season.

Why do time critical and sensitive actions put on ‘Caribbean Time’? Everything is tomorrow mon!

Government should, without a doubt, allow everyone to secure objects on their properties, without the red tape waiting period, so it doesn't get blown away! If Government gives stop orders now, and things are not fastened down, and they blow away and kill someone, it will be on their head, and it makes absolutely no sense. We need the security knowing our neighbor projectiles will not kill us. Stop with the month long decisions, hurricane season is upon us NOW!
