‘Get rid of derelict vehicles on VG!’ – radio show caller

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A caller to the ‘Speak Out BVI’ radio talk show last week Tuesday September 16, 2014 called in to place on record his concern about the many derelict vehicles on the sides of the roads and in people’s compounds in Virgin Gorda (VG) and their potential to harbour mosquitos thereby spreading diseases.

The caller who did not give his name said that this problem is a major one on Virgin Gorda that can not only lead to diseases but also tarnish the pristine image of the island’s tourism. He wants Government to address this for the sake of the island’s health and tourism.

The show was aired in ZBVI 780 AM and hosted by Doug Wheatley.

“I know some years ago there was a programme that the Government was to have brought to Virgin Gorda where old vehicles would be drained of oil and taken to one of the islands like Trinidad or some place and it never happened,” the caller, a resident of Virgin Gorda, said.

“I guess it was coming up to election time and people would have wanted to keep their vehicles,” he said. “That is one of the major, major sources of mosquitoes,” he pointed out during the call.

He said that people have the tendency to park their vehicles for years saying that they have valuable parts that they will eventually reuse but never do.

In addition, the caller said that garbage disposal is a problem on the island that can bring disrepute to its tourism.

He noted that since Virgin Gorda does not have an incinerator, the garbage is collected using trucks and it is then taken to Tortola for disposal at the waste management facility there.

“I was doing a tour over in St. John [United States Virgin Islands] and I was so embarrassed [to see this huge pile of smoke] that looked like a volcano,” the caller said, describing burning of garbage on Virgin Gorda.

“In those two areas we need to pay some attention,” he stressed.

WOW! So does the junkyard in Hodges Creek Tortola owned by one family. Pickering lives there in the area and for years have not made them clean it up. Rats, cats, stray dogs, unhealthy living conditions all the time. Worthless attitude and an insult to us residents who own homes there. If I had property somewhere else I would move.

Me too. What a shame that we try to portray these islands as pristine and beautiful only to be found out that none of this is true. When Tourists see this filth they go home and talk and some have said how disappointed they were about all this mess. Hodges Creek junkyard is the biggest eyesore East End and we know the family well and they could not give a Rats A... Where are our Officials on this?????? SPEAK YOUR MIND BVI!

Why people got to be so nasty and expect people to clean up after them? Why can't the owners of these old cars call solid waste and arrange to have the vehicles disposed of? We need to stop blaming government for our nastiness!!!

This is nothing to do with our elected ministers. It's all of us. Let us do our part . Take pride in where we live. SIMPLE!

While I do understand and agree that we the people need to do our part. You need to dig a bit deeper into the situation and YES the Government is to blame as they are the ones that contracted people to collect and stock pile the old cars etc, How ever it was cleaned up before and days after more garbage appeared, there was even a sign erected on the said property in VG which has long gone walking. So sadly now we ended up with not only old cars we got fridge, stove, gas tanks even a sail boat.

VG Garbage is not taken to Tortola, It is burnt on Virgin Gorda openly and the smoke is breath taking when u pass that road on the mountain side. Most of does bins needs to be changed, and the garbage collectors don't even care to clean up around the bins . just taking what's in the bins and go. what fall out on the ground would just stay there. especially in the North Sound area. It's a shame to see this. The residents on a whole can do better than they are doing. I remember some years ago Carnival Cruise Lines threatened to stop port calls to Santo Domingo for that same Garbage issue. They had to clean up their act. I guess this is what we want to see happen here.

The Government is blind, have made their money for life and don't care about us. When we vote, we are voting for the same RATS over and over again. The place has gotten worse and they just keep talking the same garbage, making the same old lame speeches, putting their hands in the cookie jar and the saga continues. I have no respect for any of them and voting seems like a waste of time, but I will forever vote for the lesser of two evils because it is my duty, or I cannot complain about anything. I used to love the BVI, alas....POOR US.
