ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The controversial subject of gay marriages will be one of the topics of argument in the National High School Debating Competition at Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium on Monday January 30, 2017.

The debate will get underway at 6:00 P.M. with the first topic ‘Gay marriage harms the institution of traditional marriage.’ For the Proposition will be the Bregado Flax Educational Centre (BFEC) while for the Opposition will be St George's Secondary School.

The second debate topic, ‘Higher tax should be levied on Junk Foods’, will see the BVI Seventh-day Adventist School for the Proposition and the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies for the Opposition.

Meanwhile, host of the television show on JTV Channel 55, Spotlight, Mr Cromwell Smith aka Edju En Ka has been encouraging the public to support the students with their attendance as he said there are often very brilliant debates that are usually done in an empty auditorium.

Confidence

On his show of January 24, 2017 Mr Smith had two former members of the Bregado Flax Educaional Centre’s debating team, Johanna Gibson who is now studying English at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) and Khadija Roberts, a Human Services student at HLSCC.

According to Roberts, debating has helped her in her tertiary studies, especially when it comes to making presentations, since she is more confident. “Because we have that experience of public speaking already.”

Reflecting on her time as a member of her school’s debating team, Gibson recalled that preparation was hard. “…every afternoon making sure that your enunciation and pronunciation were on point and our teachers would drill us to make sure we were perfect.”

Meanwhile, the semi-finals of the National High School Debating Competition will be held on February 13, 2017 and the final on March 15, 2017.

What the hell.... we cant give our students something better to debate? We always puttin gay people up on display like they can reproduce and be anything but a sign of failed parenting and emotional disorder. The food is so jacked up with hormones it makes you gay anyway, look at all the man boobs around here.... i get it, their here and their queer but leave them alone

At its Best. Once it has infiltrated the children you know the country is done.

leave them alone yes, but the rest of your comment is ignorant. A good parent loves their child unconditionally. Gays contribute much to the world and no- many don't flaunt it. Sugary food is a good topic because it is health-based. It is not taxing which will change it but education in nutrition that will. I would like to see debates on the value of cultural History and citizen activism discussed. People forget about those values.

These topics should be revised and centered around Education in the Virgin Islands (Pros and Cons), and its impact in the 21st Century. Stop dumbing down our children with Americanized junk topics.

The premise of the debate on gay marriage is erroneous and very negative. Gay marriage should not even be debated. What they should be debating is the problem of gender-based violence which has reached epidemic proportions. Gay folks in a loving relationship do not in any way harm traditional marriage. Stop spreading hate. Teach tolerance.

They can debate all night about gayness in that school. The amount of girls heavy into Lesbianisim there is appalling. From pictures to videos, no Shane at all.
