Garbage Collectors fume over late payments from Gov’t
They say the continuing issues of late payment are costing them good credit ratings, and having to pay too many late fees.
According to one of the garbage collectors, who chose to speak of his plight under the veil of anonymity, told Virgin Islands News Online in an interview on Thursday April 6, 2017, that the matter is further compounded with an invoice that they have to submit every month.
According to him, from 2010 to 2014, the two Garbage Collectors in Virgin Gorda, one in Jost Van Dyke and Anegada and the two on Tortola, used to get paid by the 26th of every month. Then from 2015 to present, the pay began taking a longer time to come through, ranging from two or three days to even one time on the 17th.To make matters even worse, they never had to send an invoice every month for work done, now they do.
Calling on the Governor
The garbage contractor is calling on the Governor John S. Duncan OBE, who created history recently when he reminded all that he was still the boss, and ordered over $1 million to be paid to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and the legal arm of government, to now step in to help them.
“Up to now we aint get paid yet, that’s ridiculous boss. Where is the Governor? Let him dip in now and pay the garbage contractors them,” our source said.
“Today is the 6th and I haven’t gotten paid yet for last month garbage and this is a pain in the @4$ because all my bills them running in arrears. I have to pay additional fees for late fees but when they pay me is the same money I getting.”
Another garbage collector, who is similarly affected, said the bottom line is he gets paid and don’t have a problem with the lateness.
Efforts to get a comment from Government were not successful up to time of publication.

If the work is performed ( hopefully there is some verification that work was done in accordance with the contract), why can't the contractors get paid on time? The money was appropriated in the 2107 budget by the HOA for garbage collections so why what is the problem in paying the contractors? Is there a cash flow problem? Are revenue sharing down? Is a mid year review and changes needed in the budget? The budget is a projection and contracts should be aa
