WICKHAMS CAY II, Tortola, VI – “It makes me feel happy to know that I am not chasing a dream, this is real and Digicel is taking it on and I am fully behind them with it,” said Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party and Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3).

“I know they support my league and I want to support them in this effort so, like I said before, the future is bright for basketball in the territory,” added Hon Fraser.

Over the years, Hon Fraser has been championing the cause of youth development, especially through his annual basketball league- ‘Honourable Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League’. This year’s staging of the league is currently in progress.

Yesterday August 25, 2015, at the time of making the statement, Hon Fraser was speaking exclusively with Virgin Islands News Online shortly after Digicel and the National Basketball Association (NBA) launched the Digicel/NBA Jump Start Basketball Clinics in the Caribbean.

The programme started here in the Virgin Islands and will continue in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Turks and Caicos Islands, culminating on September 28, 2015.

The launch took place at the Moorings Conference Room, Wickham’s Cay II, where the room was filled to capacity with the youth basketballers, coaches, NBA and Digicel officials and other persons of interest, including the acting Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines, Mr Paul A. Hewlett, Digicel Brand Ambassador Jason A. Edwin, among others.

'Digicel is the company of the island'

“I can’t ignore the temptation to say that Digicel is the company of the island and based in Jamaica, in the Caribbean, so they are quite familiar with other sports, soccer, rugby, cricket and now they are launching into American territory, NBA basketball and I am quite excited about it,” said Hon Fraser.

According to Honourable Fraser, he is quite comfortable that the company has what it takes to see the programme through as long as the people of the Virgin Islands and the rest of the Caribbean show a genuine interest.

Forty youths, aged 14-16, have been selected to participate in the clinics here in the VI and, according to Hon Fraser, he is quite pleased to have noted a number of the youths selected have at some stage participated in the Honourable Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League.

“The thing about basketball in the BVI is that the players play in just about all the different leagues, so the Honourable Julian Fraser Save the Seed League is no exception. Right now our league is going on and you would imagine that this is going to play well for our league this year,” said Honourable Fraser.

Basketball in Tortola is terrible. Doesn't matter who you bring in because neither the coaches or players have a real work ethic. You got a coach who wear a back pack the entire time at practice. You have a coach wearing flip flops all the time. Coaches who are watching you tube videos. Coach mike left coach Steve quit training. Island basketball now is just smoke a mirrors.

You & Fraser amazes most of us in the BVI. In the last few years to now there has been no one elected that has done more for the youth of this Territory than Myron and Fahie. The records will show this.

Where was Fraser all these years while basketball was being developed in this Territory? He just come with his company taking all the credit. This is deception at its best.

I love this initiative but let us help these youth to get a college education because statistics show that only one of every three thousand youth in college reaches the NBA. Let us becarefull in how we set up our youth.

Your stats are way off. Less than 1% of college player's make it to NBA

While I appreciate this, I prefer the initiative that Juggy, Fahie and even Steve had at different points of sending the youth off to different colleges and even high schools in the USA. We need to educate our youth to use basketball and don't let basketball use them. Let us revive this and fund it. More of our youth will benefit from this as was done in the past. Some even played in different pro-leagues afterwards.

Her speech is not worst than anyone other elected official..can you do any better? Just run along and go hide yourself for she sure sounds better than the last rep. The point is, we understand her and she's working for the people of the 6th district..now that makes sense.

I believe 88 program sent away more kids to more quality schools. Steve program government
Had to pay for them to go away. 88 program sent kids away on real scholarships. My son is in states because of that program. Dervin, Steve and Karl's programs the government has to give the children money to go away.

Government already burdened enough bring back 88 program and that coach.

I talked to coach and he said he would never come back here. He would only come on vacation. He right over in St Martin sending kids to states. I wanted him to stay but people here was so jealous of my coach. Even the guy who run the program.

It seems as if the campaign is on between Fraser and Fahie for the VIP leadership one into education and the other into basketball but both work together no. All work and no play and all play and no work make Jack a dull boy or mere toy. I love them both all in the name of carrying the BVI forward
