VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – The large population of Grenadians living among the Virgin Gorda (VG) community, topped up by a significant number of Antiguans, together with the rich blend of ‘born here’ Virgin Islanders and others from various parts of the world provided the perfect opportunity for a real fete at the first international night at the Grace Vanterpool Festiville on Virgin Gorda on April 19, 2014.
It all started after the official opening ceremony of the Festiville when the bands ‘Session reloaded’ and ‘Showtime band’ took to the stage to create the party environment, one which they did at their best. Then home grown Martino ‘Tino’ Marks took it up to another notch with his live performance.
The MC of the night Paul ‘Gadiethz’ Peart along with Deejay Push Pop and others local Deejays kept the crowd alive until after 2:30am today when one of Grenada’s soca sensations ‘Tall Pree’ arrived on stage.
It has always been said that carnival in Grenada is one that is much different from other Caribbean countries. It is said that when Grenadians take to the streets they grab hold of whatever they can and take with them to make their party exciting. “They would uproot tree, fetch old fridge, if a funeral happen to be around they crazy so to take that coffin and party with it though; that 'Greenes' people,” said a Grenadian.
With the display of last night one has to believe that notion about Grenadians and their carnival. The Grace Vanterpool Festiville ground went wild as ‘Tall Pree’ got on stage in his full energetic style. Only God knows where the Grenadians got the branches of trees and other objects to party but it was a fun sight to see.
Encore performances followed as he attempted to leave the stage but finally he had to allow for the Antiguans to be showcased with the sauvé savvy of Onyan and the Burning Flames.
Their style was not the gyrating and stage hopping type but rather they made the strings of their guitars mellow the bones of fans. They belted out some their own tunes and those of other singers that were obviously hot in the heads of the ‘Party animals’ of the night. Moving; rather jamming; from side to side and front to back was the hype.
But for a few women that was not enough, they wanted to test the waist of the singer and took their ‘bumpa’ rolling energy to the stage.
While Onyan took his backball with a smile and a steady looking back to examine what he was feeling from behind, his other colleague was not going to let it end like that. He ripped off his shirt, still beating the strings of his gaiter and chanting his lines at intervals, and showed what was in the waist of an Antiguan entertainer.
They brought the first night of the Festiville to a close as they ended their performance at 5:00am.
It might have been a case of too much to drink, dissatisfaction or something else that may have been responsible for two men closing the celebrations with a fight which resulted in the local police of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) stepping in. The cops were obviously not pleased with the men as they shattered the record of what was promising to be an incident free night.
