‘Forget the nuclear family; make more children!’ – Rev. Dr Bentley Thomas
The service at which the Reverend spoke was the culmination of an earlier march by the Christian community as part of the Emancipation commemorations.
In his uplifting and lively style of delivery, Dr. Thomas said he believes encouraging the limiting of family size is a strategy to restrict the growth of the black family.
“Have you noticed what they (foreigners) are doing to these islands? They are breeding a whole lot of children. You know why? Because they want to replace us. But we don’t realize what is happening. We don’t realize the time of the day. They have already gotten us down patted to let’s have a nuclear family…just us four and no more. I want us to wake up, because a part of preserving the posterity of our future is in children. We have to have children,” he said.
“Stop letting the mastocracy still use this slave mentality upon us to tell us we don’t need more children because we can’t afford it. We came out of homes where our parents couldn’t afford it but we survived,” he said.
He said that in contrast the Jews always think of their children and their children’s children. “We ought to be thinking of preserving our children,” he said. “During slavery the black family was divided; separating husbands from wives, parents from children, brothers and sisters and friends from friends,” he said.

The nuclear family is a model that provides the needed stability to nurture children into becoming responsible adults. The opposite view of baby mothers and baby fathers simply encourages the no responsibility culture that unfortunately prevails in many parts of the Caribbean.
It is well documented that the lack of father role models in our youth causes many problems in society, though the valiant efforts of single mothers should not be forgotten. The nuclear family, though sometimes an ideal, should receive support not attack.
