ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - A wave of hundreds of young footballers rolled down Waterfront Drive on Wednesday September 30, 2015 adorned with brightly coloured football shirts designating their BDO Primary School League and BVIFA High School League team colours.

The now traditional march through the capital of the Virgin Islands, Road Town, brought traffic and bystanders alike to a halt as persons waved and cheered on the boys and girls. Families and friends lined the procession, a police escort steered the way, the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Drum Corps played their hearts out and DJ “Dre” kept the feet tapping with cool sounds on a blistering hot afternoon.

Once safely arrived at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School auditorium, the youth were greeted by BVI Football Association (BVIFA) President Mr Andy Bickerton, Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith, Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn, BDO Representative Mr Ryan Geluk and Acting Assistant Director of Youth Affairs and Sports Mr Paul A. Hewlett.

“You have a bonus this year,” stated Mr Bickerton. “This is the second league of the year as we are now changing to a September start to avoid clashes with other events. Football is spreading and from Primary School to High School, will hopefully stay in your blood. Our coaches are improving through attending Licensed Courses and hopefully that will make you all better players as we look to continually improve the standard of football throughout the territory.”

“It’s good to see that the numbers have gone up from a couple of years ago,” commented Premier Smith. “Seeing so many of you have now gone on to High School and are still keen on playing is also encouraging for the continued growth of football.”

Hon Walwyn noted that he was very pleased with the work done by the BVI Football Association. “If you want to keep anything alive, it’s important that you always ensure the younger persons are involved and this School League is one of the success stories. If this continues football will become one of the leading sports in the territory.”

Walwyn also acknowledged the importance of sponsors and that businesses have a responsibility to the community to support and build programmes such as these. “Coming together we can get a lot more done for the country.”

Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, BDO, Ryan Geluk expressed that the company was very proud of its continued support for the Primary School League and reminded the children to make sure they have fun and enjoy their season. “Football is about a lot of fun, winning is fun, but so is just taking part, so remember to have fun. Make sure you enjoy yourselves and may the best team win.”

After the ceremony, several youngsters were invited to represent their school in various skill drills, including shooting, passing and dribbling, organised by the BVIFA coaches and Technical Director Katie Rowson.

The Primary and High School Leagues both start from Monday October 5, 2015 and the schedules will be available to schools from Friday October 2, 2015.

He is an island man so he will push that sport...Mean while the same individual is killing both basket ball and softball at the same time...These are BVI loved/played sports.

Now I see why it's going to be successful, BVI people love their white people and look who out front for the BVI Football Assoc. It's funny how we want all our own people for certain stuff, but if a white person heads it we still all for it. Look now they talking about cricket who head that, Charlie.

You mean to tell me that their is no one in the UK of African descent that Queen Mum could send down here versus the white Governors she continues to send on four year vacations here. People Open Your Eyes! They slowly taking over BVI, who run the Off SHore Banking that our economy so dependent on?

Look closely, judge slowly, act quickly!

dear oh dear- the indigenous sports do not include basketball - look up the meaning of indigenous - cricket was played before softball, but the two used to co-exist , played at different times during the year- many crossed from one sport to the other- so cricket, softball and horse racing are the National Sports. However what is really wrong is that some sports rely on a government hand out, whilst others have gone about establishing sound infra structure and development processes.

Yeah he hates basketball, or at least doesn't support it beyond political obligations. However, if you WIN you IN. Then he loves you. A coach that left here always said that and after watching closely for awhile now, that coach was exactly right.

Coach Mike used to say that all the time. I'm going to say his name yes. Coach would say when you win the big bald headed photo minister would be around the national team faster than flies on sh##.

      How true he was.

I remember him saying that a lot. And look all he said has happened. MVW came no where near National Team now look he want to recognize Kleon. Dude stay in states, don't come back here messing with these small minded people. As for Coach, he need to come back, program produced players with better skill levels than any other program.

No offense, this sport doesn't get much scholarships when competing on an international scale, track is ahead and believe it or not baseball/softball getting the job done although they can do a way better job.
