Fmr Police Officer Joel Gumbs guilty of assaulting daughter

Police Officer Joel Gumbs has been found guilty in the Magistrate's Court of physically assaulting his daughter. Photo: Facebook
ROAD‎ TOWN, Tortola, VI - Senior Magistrate Tamia N. Richards convicted former Police officer Joel Gumbs for the 2014 assault of his daughter.

The two year old incident stemmed from his daughter confronting a woman who she alleged was having an 'affair' with her father.

According to the facts presented to the court, it was at their family home in Fat Hog's Bay that Gumbs, who was a member of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) at the time, approached his daughter about confronting the woman and describing her as a "whore".

The daughter did not deny and an exchange of words took place between her and her dad about the incident. It was stated that during the confrontation Gumbs threatened to take a certain course of action against his daughter, he also physically abused her by pushing and hitting her and subsequently threw her clothing out of the family house.

The daughter reported the matter to the RVIPF and when confronted he told the investigating police officers that his daughter disrespected him.

Gumbs will be sentenced for the offence when he returns to court on December 13, 2016.

That is why in our society there is so much lawlessness. parents cant even talk to their children anymore much less to correct them. Yes she is an adult but she are living under under her father's roof and should respect and obey them. children obey your parents in the lord that thy days may be long. look what is happening around us,children are bringing up parents instead of parents bringing up children. this is really sad.

@ ghutty: I am a father with daughters; and there no way I am going beat up my child over a woman(under any condition).......some of us keeps the church benches hot on Saturday or Sunday and Monday-Friday we living a double life.. plus at the time he was an officer of the law and the last time I check it remains a criminal offence to assault another person....

@ghutty. You chatting hog piss. You rightfully said she is an adult so therefore he should have address in words and not action. So are you saying even if his house rules are illegal she must respect and obey them. She saw something untoward with her father and anothe church sister which was unbelievable and she went to speK to the young woman about it, I see nothing wrong with that. He have no calling putting his hands on the young lady then threw her and the mother out they have to sleep in a car, so are you going to condone that kind of behavior. As someone commented above, they thought he was a preacher

I agree with you belonger. People see a 2 paragraph article on an online news site then proceed to give their opinions as if they know everything about the situation. This is their business as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't care less either way. They are all adults. Who was wrong certainly can't be determined by what I read here. There is certainly more going on here as you stated.

You so dumb. The 2 paragraphs that we read is what we making our comments from. Even IF there is more to the story, how are we supposed to know that? So you saying that we must judge from that which we don't know or didn't read??? Don't be an ass. If there was more, print what 'the more' is, then people might comment differently but as is stands, we working with what we got, otherwise dont put a piece of the story and expect that we will think any different. Besides, every man has a right to his own opinion.

Listen to all your asses. He should of keep he dam hands to himself. She is a grown adult women. It's no longer called discipline, it's called assault. If the church member up in the house riding off the man, well she wrong. You know he was a married man with issues, let him sought out his life before coming to you. You walk and talk and represent God. God is not the author of confusion. Her bible tells her "let not your good be evil spoken of". Keep out the people house. The girl must know or see something. She live there. He have alright to make his daughter get out and find somewhere to live with the man who breed her off. As they say "two crab cant live in the same hole". She there cause he condone it.

@wize up... You are just one of them cowards on here... You know what happened? Do you belive all you read on the media? How you could say the man assault his daughter for a piece of.... Whatever you are inferring?? So lets say your child if you dare have any, was grossly disrespectful to your friend of the opposite sex.. you tried pointing this out to you daughter or son at home and he or she like they wanted to fight you in what you paying rent for and giving them a place to live for free.. what would you do? How would you deal with it? You people make me sick. Not a mark of violence was found on her she ain't get hit yet! But this is deeper than it seems.. victimization is what it's all about. Her going to the police is in itself proving how rude and disrespectful she really is.. how many of all you parents wouldn't gone jail for the blows all you get as children and in late teens??? Backward people!!!!
