Flags hoisted at Althea Scatliffe & Ebenezer Thomas Primary
During the ceremony the students and teachers were introduced to the protocols for the anthem and national song by Acting Director of Culture, Mrs Brenda Lettesome-Tye while the design for the territorial dress was also revealed to those in attendance.
In addition to this, Ms Lorna Stephens, Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture provided details on the protocols for the flags. She guided students on how to treat, care and respect the flags that they were charged with the responsibility for.
Hon. Julian Fraser RA, who was in attendance for the ceremony held at the Ebenezer Thomas Primary, remarked that through the exercise being carried out students would be able to learn the importance of patriotism.
He added that they must develop a sense of pride and persons must be in place to ensure thatthis takes place.
Hon. Walwyn explained that the significance of the new measures implemented by the Ministry was that of instilling a sense of national pride in the students.
He expressed that the proceedings were not merely just ceremonial but more indicative of measures being taken under the Premier today.
He said it was essential that the protocols be followed wherein the flags are to be raised each morning at 8:30 and taken down at 3:30 in the afternoon.
He also told the students that the reason there were three flag poles in spite of the now, two existing flags was that the school will be tasked with coming up with a design for its own individual flag.
The Minister proclaimed that Virgin Islanders were unique in their possession of an entrepreneurial spirit, one of ownership that encouraged persons to be the best at what they do. He said this while making reference to the way in which land was bought from the slave owners by slaves who were freed.
Hon Fraser,Third District Representative, said of the process, “The initiative is truly agood thing... teaching children about growing up in a society where they arepatriotic.”
He expressed concern that it is important that the initiatives be monitored well enough to be maintained so that the process can be a lasting one.

No wonder young kids have no idea of pride and repsonsibilty. The military is not the only group that pays homeage to a flag. In fact all (most countries have a national flag). In fact militaries around the world pay homeage to their nations flags, in the olypics 1st, 2d and 3d place finishers have their flag hoisted. Instead of bitching and griping be glad the kids will have some sort of national pride and may one day want to represent the BVI and see that same flag raised on their behalf. Not to mentioin school pride. SMH
This is call patriotism!
