First time home owner’s programme among top priority in 1st District Report
He was during a recent exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online that Hon. Fahie spoke of the progamme which he said has drawn some amount of criticism, especially from members of the House of Assembly (HoA).
"I am very serious about the first time home owner programme running through Social Security. I have taken some criticism by persons when I revealed the plan but I'll be doing my annual reporting before the end of January to the First District and I will roll it out even more extensively," said Hon. Fahie.
According to Hon. Fahie, he sees the social security funds as one that can help and also be repaid. "Social security does a lot of things that I consider to be noble with our money," he said and further noted that, while saying it in a positive manner, they are not of the culture of asking the people if they can do it.
"They would sponsor an ambulance they don't ask us, we need it, and I am for it, I think it is for a good decision that they make but they didn't ask us if they could spend our money that way. They do that with the Dialysis machine, it is needed, I applaud it ... but to be honest they didn't ask us...," continued Hon. Fahie.
Insisting that the purchases were needed and necessary, he stressed that the right thing to do is for the persons paying into the Social Security to be consulted. It is on that note that he said the first time home owners' programme can work through the Social Security.
"Not having a home is a social problem, so since we are the ones paying and I am one of those they have sent to represent them, I am putting to them that not having a home is a social problem. It affects the economic situation of the family because they have to pay rent...It affects even down to the child learning...."
The members of the First District can look forward to this and other solutions that their District Representative strongly feels can work to raise the standard of living and livelihood of persons in the Territory come January 18, 2014. "I'll present them, I will present some of them to the government, and they will see if they want to take them up," said the District leader.
He further noted that despite the talks in some circles that he only complains, he has been continuously providing solutions to situations which often times falls on deaf ears. "What I recognize is that unless the solutions come from the government's side it has no weight and that is sad because the behaviour of some of them makes you wonder when they think they speaking down to you they speak as though they went to school during the week and everybody else went to school during the weekend and the holiday and especially on all-fools-day if you ask me so."
