First Pitch thrown; Let the games begin!

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - All the speeches made, all the trophies handed out and with a twirl of a once deadly arm on Saturday May 5, 2012, on the Old Recreation Ground, and Ms. Eva Simmonds tossed a ceremonial ball to officially declare the 2012 Fast Pitch Softball League open.

The League is named in her honour as one of the Territory’s most feared Pitchers and successful players.

Her Career began back in the 60’s and she was a member of the first women’s team that represented the Virgin Islands in a tournament in El Salvador. Domestically, she was one of the founding members of the Amazons along with her sister and as Simmonds stated, “I would like to give recognition to the late Julian Skelton for what he did for me. I owe it all to him.”

Skelton was the Manager of that first team.

Also present at the Ceremony were Neville Smith, President of the Softball Association; the Minister responsible for Sports, the Hon. Myron Walwyn; Patrick Harrigan, Ag Director of Youth Affairs and Sports, a representative from main Sponsor, LIME and the Hon. Mark Vanterpool.

It was Vanterpool, who re-iterated the Government’s focus on getting new lights for the Softball Field, but neither he nor Myron Walwyn could put a firm date on a delivery time or an installation completion date.

As several players noted the field was looking “shabby” and they wondered why even a coat of paint couldn’t be applied to the back wall and other minor repairs carried out.

Meanwhile, Members of the Association implored the players and officials to be on time for the Games as they had to play in daylight until such time as the lights were replaced.

Almost all the registered teams had at least one player on hand during the Opening, but unfortunately the first scheduled game had to be a forfeited as the Crushers failed to show up for the game against the Pythons, which was awarded to the defending champions by a score of 7-0.

A full report on the Reds against the Hurricanes will follow.

Today’s, Sunday May 6 games, will feature the Blue Wings against the VG Ballaz at 2 p.m. followed by the Warriors playing the Hawks.

Next weekend will see the Girls and Boys of Elmore Stoutt High School playing their first games against the Amazons and Hurricanes respectively. Saturday’s action concludes with the East Invaders playing the Braves and then on Sunday VG will take on the Reds and the Pythons will face the Hawks.

Ms. Simmonds also encouraged all Softball enthusiasts “to come and support the games” and hoped that all the players “would take advantage of the opportunities that the game has to offer”.

u think every game played at night ? if teams go away they play during the day and sometimes twice in one day- so get real- everysport has day time starts so if you want the sport to develop and improve get used to it- is it the sun being hot the problem - or is that the games now have to start on time ?? and stop calling it a National Sport- there isnt a National men's or women's team so how can it be a national sport ?
