CAPOON’S BAY, Tortola, VI - The Annual First District Basketball Camp which was sponsored by Honourable Andrew A. Fahie, the First District Committee, among other sponsors, and which began on July 14, 2014, ended as a success on Saturday July 26, 2014.

Speaking to this news site today July 28, 2014, First District Representative Hon Andrew A. Fahie said this year’s basketball camp was named in honour of the late Wilbert “Doc” Stoutt who was an awesome sportsman especially in softball and basketball.

“He is remembered to have assisted in championing the cause in successfully lobbying for sporting facilities for the First District,” Hon Fahie said.

According to the First District Representative, Stoutt had also taught many young persons of the day how to play the game of softball and basketball. “Hence this year the First District’s basketball camp was named in his honour,” he said.

The camp opened with a speech by Hon. Andrew A. Fahie, coupled with speeches by his niece Ms. Jillian Stoutt, his daughter Ms. Makayla Stoutt and his then significant other Ms. Cheryl Burke.

They all gave a brief history of the late Wilbert “Doc” Stoutt and encouraged the young people to do their best in life at all times and to never give up. He said in addition Stoutt’s daughter Ms. Makayla Stoutt hit the ceremonial opening shot in one try to officially declare the camp opened.

He said the basket made in one attempt by Ms. Makayla Stoutt showed that her father’s sporting greatness is in her genes. The camp was held at the Benjamin Romney Recreational Complex. The motto of the camp was “NEVER GIVE UP!”

According to Hon Fahie, there were more than forty young people ranging from ages 7 to 17 years from the First District enrolled in the camp and were all fully participating in the camp daily.

He said that at the end of each of the camp session daily the power of prayer would always be emphasized. He said that he also gave them inspirational speeches to “never give up” with other persons in the First District also giving the youths motivational speeches.

He said that the camp’s participants learned the fundamentals about basketball and about life. “Over the past years coming out of the camp was a 9 to 13 years basketball team that won the Championship for this year’s 2014 Annual Milton McLean’s league,” he said.

He said that the team will be entering this year’s Hon. Julian Fraser’s Annual Save the Seed Basketball League in their respective division.

The camp concluded on the basketball court in Capoon’s Bay on Saturday July 26, 2014 at 7:00 pm. During the closing of the camp the young people who participated in the camp entertained friends, family and parents with many games as well as demonstrated the skills gained in the camp.

“It was an exciting evening with a huge turnout by the First District community. The Shooting Star Steel pan orchestra also entertained the large group with many awesome selections getting everyone ready for Festival 2014,” said Hon Fahie.

He said that the camp was supervised by Mr. Karl Scatliffe and his competent and professional team. “They did an excellent job,” he said.

According to a press release from the First District Committee, the First District Representative Hon. Andrew A. Fahie has once again sponsored many youth programmes and activities this summer.

“The next event that Hon. Andrew A. Fahie will be sponsoring for the First District youth is the Annual Athletic Camp at Capoon’s Bay from 9th August to 16th August, 2014.
