WICKHAM’S CAY I, Tortola, VI- After more than 6 months absence, the sight of a cruise ship in port in the Virgin Islands will be realised this month-end, providing everything goes as plan. This is according to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tortola Pier Park Limited (TPPL), Mr Vance M. Lewis.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, today, October 8, 2020, at Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park to announce the park’s partnership with VISAR to host its first ever Ice Skating Wonder Land at Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park from November until January 6, 2021, Mr Lewis said discussions continue with cruise lines; however, this month-end will see a cruise ship make a call to the territory, albeit without cruise passengers.

Warm lay-up

“At the moment we are cleared by Cabinet to do or what they call warm lay-up or technical call, that is in effect," Mr Lewis stated, adding that the VI "may have one later this month."

Mr Lewis explained that a warm lay-up is essentially a call to a port but there are no passengers involved. “There is reduced crew, there is reduced maintenance and they will do essential maintenance just to make sure that whenever the industry fully reopens they are ready to go.”

The CEO said the ship’s technical crew members are not likely to get off the ship but if they do they will follow all protocols which are in force by the Ministry of Health.

He said warm lay-ups can last anywhere up to 12 months, “but in our case it is going to be by a month by month basis and it may just be for a couple of months.”

Discussions ongoing with cruise lines

Mr Lewis also noted that the VI is part of the Global Sea Trade Conference being held this week virtually and that talks with several cruise lines at that event are ongoing.

He said the cruise lines being communicated with include Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Norweigan Cruise Line, who are berthing partners, as well as Royal Caribbean and Viking among others.

The cruise conversations have also begun regionally, Mr Lewis added, noting that the VI is part of a Regional Task Force that has been established by the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA). “Where we are talking about when cruise tourism is reintroduced to the Caribbean how we are going to do it.”

CDC ban on cruise expires Oct 31, 2020

Cruise ships will be free to set sail again early November if they so choose, following a White House order that scrapped a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plan to extend the no-sail order to mid-February 2021.

Instead, the CDC's new order extends the cruising ban to October 31, 2020, following a meeting at the White House this week, where CDC Director Robert Redfield's decision to extend the deadline through next year was overruled, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and Axios.

Speaking about the lifting of the ban this month-end, Mr Lewis said: “That is a signal to us that cruising is going to start very soon.”

As per the article, because of this pandemic the CDC themselves set a date for mid-Feb. 2021 but it’s that wicked President Strutting his power that had this overrule to Oct this year. . This report said that the crew “may not” disembark but they just might so what measures will be in place in they event they will?.. also as a people we need to know what measures are being put in place for when the borders open for safeguarding.. and not last minute knowledge re: same.

Sooner or later we will need to open up our port/ports to cruise passengers entry. But before we rush into doing that, we need to consider the continuing high number of Covid-19 infected cases, and deaths still accuring in many Countries. As of this typing, only a small % of people was tested in Russia by the Sputnik-vavcine, the first disputed vaccine regestered in the world. All of the major countries, and others lest develop ones that are far more medically advanced than the B.V.I are opening up their borddrs at their risk. Take for instant, the great USA, 7+ millions positive cases, including President Donald. Over two hundred thousand died, so far. Should not we use known data to help us to make good and senceable choices, rather than allow anxiety to cloud our minds, and we open our Country's ports wide open to the whosoever will may come, without having first knowledgable of their medical condition? Let's say a tourist comes in at our landing Port. And aproximately fifteen hundred passengers disembarked. Some, let's say 800 of them desire transortation site seeing, and others to various beaches. Tell me, if you are able to, would you sent them on a safari bus? if you will allowed to sit on the safari touching each others, as happened in the pass, we will know for sure that you have placed a higher value on money, rather the humans life. We should not allow people that have not yet solved the Covid-19 problem in their own Country to excite to open up our cruise ship ports it please them, rather, se should open up when we are able to cope with the unknown reasonsble well. "WE ARE NOT YET OUT OF THE WOODS." CAUTION please. God's Blessings.

Will the cruise sheep have to go through a 4 day quarantine? Testing prior to and on landing? If the entry requirements for those aboard the floating petri dishes are not the same across the board for everyone else, this is so very WRONG!
