ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Firefighters from the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service were last evening, April 27, 2019, treated to a special dinner as part of a grand gesture of appreciation from the Owners, Principal and Teachers of the Century House Montessori School in Diamond Estate, Tortola.

Recently, the privately owned institution and other surrounding buildings came under threat following a massive bush fire occurred in the vicinity of Sky World, to which firemen battled the blaze and eventually saved the buildings from being consumed by the fire.

Gratitude

In expressing gratitude for the dinner, Chief Fire Officer (CFO), Mr Zebalon A. McLean said, "I thank the Montessori School for this most generous gesture in appreciation of the good work our Fire Officers continue to do in and for the Territory.”

He pointed out that the school, “had a front-row seat to the 3-hour fight our officers underwent to bring this 2½ Acre Fire under control,” and as such, the gesture is a welcomed one.

The Chief Fire Officer on behalf of his team also thanked Minister of Communication & Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) for his continued concerns and encouragement given to the local officers.

No Burning – CFO

In a chilling reminder to desist from starting fires, the CFO said, "We also beseech the public, not to engage in backyard or hillside burning at this time, given the extremely dry conditions," and the risk firemen face to put out the blaze.

Over the past weeks, the Fire Service and the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) have issued joint statements regarding the lighting of outdoor fires in the territory.

With several bush fires already recorded for the season, they have repeatedly told residents to desist from burning and starting fires outdoor and to extinguish any fire seen or left unattended.
