ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Service to our communities, our Caribbean and our world is something that a lot of people expect from the Virgin Islands (VI), was a statement made by Estaban Smith, who was the keynote speaker at the St. Georges School (Secondary Division) graduation yesterday June, 27, 2012.

Advising the 15 graduates of the St. Georges School, Mr. Smith encouraged them to never give up on anything no matter how big it may seem. He added that they should always try new things.

The speaker, who recently graduated from the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, encouraged the students to find and follow their own vision, something that they truly love rather than the community’s interest. “Once we find something we love we should never stop trying to do our best at it, never stop trying to do new things with it and most importantly, you should find ways to help people with it.”

He advised them to never be afraid to try new things and potentially fail at them.

In congratulatory remarks, Mr. Smith said, "The academic excellence of the school is remarkable and the students, teachers and the parents should be proud.”

He further stated that the VI is counting on its students to be the leaders, the thinkers and the dreamers to guide the country forward. He also instructed them to always find some way or somehow to always give back to the communities and home by using their education gained in life and their talents.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn, who was unable to be present at the graduation, the new acting Chief Education Officer, Jillian Douglas-Phillip, in reading a speech sent from the Minister, congratulated the students on their achievements.

The Minister’s speech read that he encouraged the graduates to embrace a world full of infinite opportunities and whatever their next assignment in life may be, to approach it with optimism, pride and with a determination to succeed.

The Minister suggested that they further their studies at the local college.

“I encourage as many of you as possible, to continue your educational pursuits right here at home at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College… Be happy and confident in your abilities and achieve more than you dare imagine.”

Rhea Coooper was the Valedictorian of the school with a 7.675 GPA, with salutatorian being Benjamin Richards.

Kyle Dabreo, Shaleah Smith and Shaian Vandenburg were enlisted on the school’s Honour Roll.

Shaian Vandenburg was also announced as the ‘Spirit of St. Georges'.
