ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – As the Virgin Islands celebrates Senior Citizens Month and more attention is expected to be given to the seniors of the Territory, it has been revealed that families of residents of the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly do not visit the seniors often enough to show them love and support.

In light of that, Manager of the Home Janeth George, told Virgin Islands News Online that they will be launching a ‘Family Visiting Day’ on May 23, 2012.

“The residents do get visits from some of their family and friends but they don’t get as much as they should, the residents need the support from their family,” Ms. George revealed.

She stated that through the launching of the Family Visiting Day, families and friends would be encouraged to visit their loved ones in the home, and continue to do so every second Tuesday of every month.

“Persons are invited everyday of the week to visit, but through the Family Visiting Day we will be encouraging more family participation, to come in and look for their loved ones, once a month, rather than couple times a year.”

In speaking with an active resident of the home, Mr. Henry White, he told this news site that he would like more visitors regularly and he is happy about the launching of the day and hopes it brings families to the home much more often.

Mr. Henry, a resident of the home for the past seven years, stated that he rather be home with his family in Salt Island, because of the fact that he don’t see them often.

Ms. George stated that although the house contains 25 residents at the moment, not all are seniors.

“From my research, initially when the home was built, it was basically to assist and provide care for the elderly, but there are persons who are here who aren’t deemed elderly, but are here because they are physically disabled and their family can’t take care of them, or they have nowhere to go.”

She stated that the home is not mainly an elderly home, but now functions as a nursing home facility.

She told this news site that the home is fully funded by the Government.

For the month of May, Senior Citizen Month, senior citizens in the VI will be participating in events such as, Senior Games on May 9, 2012 at the A. O Shirley Recreational Ground; Fitness Fun Day on Jost Van Dyke on May 11, 2012, and Open House at all the centres and homes on May 23, 2012.

“I would like to encourage everyone to come on out, and encourage the seniors at the different events, this will boost their enthusiasm and participation in the events, I want to encourage the public to come out on our open day, especially the family and friends of our residents.”

O bull. I'm sure many parent struggle daily to take care of thier children. Many make sacrafice and do without to provide, some work 2 and 3 jobs so that they can take care of their children and when they get old and that child grows up and have to take care of them and they "struggling" they put them in a home. Please. Our parents are the ones who nuture us and mold us into adults, the least we can do it take care of them no matter how much we have to struggle to do it. if you cant do you nail, or your hair, or get a new car every year or two, so what. Take care of your parent.

Please...... Family should be first. I bet if the family member at the dies, they will come running to see what they can get. It is a shame that they put there family in there and do not see them but once a month. I pray to god my son does not do this to me when he feels I can not take care of myself because I would not do this to my mother or father. Where there's a will, there's a way. People take care of your family. Sometimes all they want to know if that you care.

"Polo" you too worthless. Feeding your own family is no excuse for not visiting your aged ones. Do you know how these aged ones toiled just to put food on the table in the early days. Yes many of them commute to St. Thomas, many did fishing, farming, and whatever to feed a large family. Polo, as hard as it may seem for some today, we still have it good, because money was not so abundant in the early days. Our aged ones truly DESERVE better!

Its Sad that adults cant take the time to take care of their very own parents the same ppl who made sure they had food to eat ,clothes on their backs, a shelter over their head ,took care of them when they were sick as kids etc and now turn around and place them in the elderly home and dont even go to visit . Why do we even have to waite for a Planned Visiting Day by the home . Home Care Basic is still a service being provided to have someone stay with your loved one at home while you are at work but at the end of the day you take care of your parent. How could you sleep at nights knowing mommy or daddy in the home and youre probably sleeping in a house on a land that they themselves may have help you to get ... I tell you ppl are just UNGRATEFUL .. after all that your parent have done for you its inexcusable .

One doesn’t have to take lots of groceries to the home for their love ones. They can give their time to help to, feed them give them a bath, read to them the word of God from the bible. There are lots of things they can do to show their love for their love ones everything does not always have to be about money people
