Family intensifies public assistance appeal for T'shonda Dore

- child not able to attend school due to intense pains; $79K needed for corrective surgery
Doctors at Peebles Hospital have only been able to prescribe painkillers to ease the pain from the spinal curvature affecting 11-year-old T'Shonda Dore. The father of the child, Mr Alvin Dore aka DeeJay Turbo, made a desperate plea to the public this morning, August 31, 2015, as he said it hurts deep for the family to see the child suffering so much and that they are still a very far away from raising the $79,000 needed to have her do a corrective surgery. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - T’Shonda Dore suffers from scoliosis (curvature in the spine) which threatens to damage one of her lungs if surgery is not done soon. And while the child can only be treated with pain killers by the local Peebles Hospital it wouldn’t be enough for her to sit a full day in school.

“We are pleading with all of our hearts, with every tear drop to the public, to help us in some way to get this surgery done for T’Shonda. We are no way close to the amount that is needed despite the several activities that were held up to Sunday to raise funds for her. We desperately need your help,” pleaded Mr Dore.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online this morning, Mr Dore said the child is eager to continue her education without interruption, except for the time she will have to be out for the surgery. However, with school set to reopen it would be very challenging for her to attend.

“She would be able to attend school, yes, but she wouldn’t be able to sit for long periods because it’s going to be very painful for her and that’s a major challenge that can hamper her education,” added the father.

Mr Dore said, however, they are very thankful to the many persons who have so far supported their fundraising drives.

The family’s most recent initiative was a run held at De Loose Mongoose yesterday Sunday August 30, 2015.

Children are so innocent. They shouldn't ever have to bare the consequences of pain.

Can we get this child to the UK under the UK BVI agreement for healthcare?

If the government wanted to help this child they would have. They help people all the time. See if the dear lady in the Ministry of Health can assist. A lot can be done with the stroke of a pen (if they want)

if they haven't already the family should look into Shriner's Hospital for Children. They assist families in need with these type of medical services. They have a clinic at least once a year in St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico. Children are then treated at the Springfield, Massachusetts hospital.

People don't usually die from this problem but it significantly reduces their quality of life because of this deformity. There are a few people in the BVI living with this disability.

Scoliosis therapy or exercises may have a place in helping patients who fall into a treatment grey area! 'This method is good for well-motivated patients with a certain type of curve, for which surgery is not necessarily the answer. A progressive curve which also has a bony deformity needs surgery! Googles: scoliosis exercises, there are many online videos demonstrating the various exercises to correct this deformity! Try it, it is the cheaper and better alternative to surgery. I pray God's healing touch upon your daughter and that her healing will draw others to God!

Not to be political but make sure she is registered under NHI. That will cover 60% or 80% of the cost. Since that only kicks in 2016 the facility may agree to the 20% - 40% now as a down payment. Can our govt guarantee a loan for the 20% - 40%? I do not mind my tax dollars going towards this at all.

Don't want to sound heartless but sometimes when one door closes we have to try opening another. Yes we have to help each other but remember too, things are hard. I will advise the family to try another country. The US is not the only country doing this type of surgery. The funds you already collected might be more than enough to get that same surgery done in places like Jamaica, Cuba and so forth.
