ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- In an emotional plea to the public via Facebook, Director of Family Support Network (FSN), Dr Sylvia M. Simmonds has reported that families seeking food assistance are being turned away as FSN is out of food.

Dr Simmonds described the post made on August 7, 2016 on the BVI Community Board as a “cry for help” as she noted that some families are desperate for assistance.

“The Family Support Network's Pantry is out of food. Since Thursday we turned 8 families away because we have no food,” Dr Simmonds wrote.

534 received food assistance so far this year

The FSN Director further said that from January 2016 to date, FSN has have given food to 534 men/women.

“…to get a clear view of the numbers that are fed, you need to multiple an average of 2 children per person X 534 = 1068). We have grandmothers who are raising their grandchildren on very limited incomes; mothers who are waiting for outstanding child maintenance, to be told by the court that no monies have been paid or mothers who have to decide whether to pay the rent, keep the lights on or buy food.”

Further relating the gloom that some families face, Dr Simmonds said school is to reopen in a few weeks and “families will have to again decide with their limited income what is more important school uniform, books, or food,” she said.

“Because of the great demand for food, families can only receive food once a month. Whatever you are able to donate to our pantry will be greatly appreciated. Every bit counts. Thanking you in advance for your contribution to our food pantry,” Dr Simmonds wrote.

Meanwhile, it was on June 13, 2016 at a fund raising walk that Dr Simmonds revealed that FSN saw a large increase in clients from 2015 to June 2016, categorised by new clients, counselling sessions, phone call counselling, food distribution and protection orders.

The amount of children in the FSN system for 2015 is 27, while for 2016 there are some 24. Women seen by FSN in 2015 numbered 161 while for 2016, some 60 have already been catered for.

I think that you should also be doing a campaign to educate persons on how to survive instead of just giving out food all the time. These persons have now become lazy and have found a way to circumvent the system. Whilst it is necessary to feed the hungry are you sure that those persons receiving the food, do need it? The figure you quoted is increasing everyday and makes one wonder what is really going on.

@Asking, the supermarkets will never do that. But it is a good point. What the supermarkets should do is set up some type of program like they do in the States. The supermarkets will donate the left over stuff that they do not sell that is in good condition to different food pantry's.

@Educate then, I agree with you. I do believe that some, not all of the people that is getting this food don't really need it. I could go to the system but, I refuse to do that. You would be surprise at the garden my daughter and I have started in the back of our home. Cabbage, collard greens, eggplant, okra, red and green peppers. Different types of cooking herbs. And a little chicken coop with a few chickens for eggs. Soon, we are going to try and make honey. Never thought I would enjoy doing this and it is not hard to do.

@True, I like what you are doing and I am going to start my own garden. I don't do anything with the backyard and you give me a great idea. Now I am only speaking for myself, I have two boys that I am raising on my own have a job and do the best that I can because I have no intentions of going to the Government for anything. My parents never went to the Government for anything and they made it. You have to learn how the survive and stand on your own feet.

If alot of men need to live up to their responsibilities and these things wouldnt happen. Alot of men have their wives and girlfriend working two jobs while they sit on their behinds and cry brokes. i know of a situation where a husband left his wife and moved away and havent looked back. It has been five years and she struggles to feed their two children. This is a mother with a full time job. When asked why she dont get a part time she said she cant leave her young little daughters home alone..i agree. Long ago kids were left home and the village watched them but not now... Tortola isnt paradise anymore, these men are preying on our kids and breaking into our homes. Our goverment dont seems to care.. house rent is a killer, bank interest rate is a next..dont talk about gasoline and food. How do we in the BVI survive? They say go college, people do but come back to get paid less than $2500 with a bachelors and masters degree.

....how so many people find money to have the latest cell phones and don't talk about the food shops how full they are, but people still complain. While there are many who genuinely need stuff, there are far too many living above their means by miles. Why are people with 4 kids and struggling still getting 3 more kids on top of that? This is nuts and will kill the country!

@. Not really but some people need to be a little more responsible , married or not. I personally know of a situation where the man came to the marriage with two children, the wife also came with two. Now they have two together and the wife is pregnant again. To my knowledge only one of them makes a little over $2500 a month, so right now they need help. Only two of the children over the age of 13. I remember the old folks saying that as long as you are married, no problem with having children. But in this day and age, nothing go so.

@. I totally understand. Mine left me also with two to raise on my own. But you know what? The kids don't stay little for long. One day, the slimy deadbeat is going to need those same children that he walk away from to pour water down his throat on his sick bed. Last time I heard, his prostate was messed up. If you noticed, the men that do their children wrong always end up with some type of prostrate problem.

I think we should remember some people using FSN do also work, but they are on low wages $4/$5 per hour. It is a shame that more respect was not shown for the food donation boxes at R.Way, this works successfully in many countries. Respect and understanding should be shown for those in genuine need.

Ain't no NDP have anyone hungry. It might not be easy but, there are ways. Me, if I'm hungry, I would go into one of the supermarkets and beg the manager if I can pack bags or clean in front the store to make a few dollars to get something to cook. I could care less who pass by and see me. There is no shame in the game when it is a honest dollar.

FSN does sterling work but it should be government agencies providing for genuine cases of need.

The BVI killed it self. You have to do what you have to do to survive. And I don't mean doing illegal things. People is ashamed to let others see them doing jobs that they think is beneath them. I started off washing dishes, sweeping and moping floors.
