Fahie fastest as new Track & Field season gets underway
Several athletes had stirring performances during the Meet staged on the A.O. Shirley Ground and none more so than L’Tsha Fahie, who tore down the 100m’s in a time of 12.16 to claim a Carifta Games qualifying mark.
“From last year I thought she was going to be something special,” noted Willis "Chucky" Todman, “she has shown it throughout her training and last night (Friday) really showed it. I threw her in at the last minute and am really pleased with her performance, she has some acceleration out of this world and to pull out that sort of time is amazing.”
Todman was also pleased with the performances of Zakaria Frett and Beyonce Defreitas, who finished first and second with times of 12.70 and 12.83 in the u15 100m, respectively, as well as the come back to competitive running of Samantha John
“Beyonce and Zak are two to watch over the coming years. Everyone has been talking about Tarika (Moses) and “Mimi” (Lakeisha Warner), but these are following right in their footsteps and might be a step ahead. Samantha came back and showed that if she continues she can be a force to be reckoned with.”
John won the 800m in a time of 2:17.32 ahead of Moses in 2:21.06. Kelz Fortune came third.
Mariah Christian won the U15 version ahead of Anique Daniel; 2:40.13 to 2:40.17.
The season began with a couple of 10m plus leaps from Niayla Smith in the Triple Jump and a couple of new records, including Kyron McMaster who covered the 400m Hurdles in 56.31 seconds to set a new Scholastic Record and became just the fourth Virgin Islands’ athlete to have ever broken the minute mark in the event.
Arianna Forbes also made a winning return to the local Track scene with her time of 1:17.23 in the women’s 400m Hurdles.
Trevia Gumbs also set a new record in the Shot Put with a distance of 12.90m, which left Meet Director, Dag Samuel’s pleased with the way things had gone.
“I am very pleased, if I’m not mistaken we had a National Record in the Shot Put, Personal Bests, a young lady making the Carifta Qualifying Standard and a new Youth and Scholastic Record from Kyron McMaster, in the 400 Hurdles who was just 3/100th’s of a second outside also qualifying for Carifta at his first attempt in the event.”
The Meet, according to Samuel, was designed to be “short and sweet and very, very competitive.”
First District Representative, Andrew A. Fahie, was on hand at the Junior Meet held on Capoons Bay on Saturday. “I am pleased to see the efforts of the BVIAA in staging this meet today. Athletics is growing and growing and I want to encourage you youngsters that if you find your talent is in this, that you work hard, be committed to train and do all the things you need to do behind the scenes. If you good and prepared you can be great.”
Again Meet Director, Mr. Samuel was pleased with the inaugural Capoon’s Bay event and is looking forward to the next one.
“Today went very well , it was short, sweet and productive, unfortunately we didn’t have as many young athletes as we expected, but will all the coaches here to see how it went, I know we will have them next time and it will be much more competitive.”
Samuel also hopes to introduce some Jumps next time round with the discovery of a sand pit on the field.
As 1st District Representative, Honourable Fahie also confirmed his commitment to supporting the Association with a donation to help further their development plans, especially with the Summer Camp.
“It is very important to be involved in Sports,” he added. “Sports teaches you discipline and it fosters a lot of good qualities and characteristics, whether it be Basketball, Track or any sport. The discipline also carries over into their work, the practice, the diligence, the preparation all gets carried over into academics, so they can excel in the same way.”
The next Junior Meet at Capons Bay will be in two weeks time, whilst on Friday January, 17, 2014 the A.O. Shirley Ground will host the third development of the season.
