ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Successful daughter of the Virgin Islands and longtime 'political icon' Patsy C. Lake had a memorable 70th birthday celebration as a large number of persons attended and had lots of wonderful remarks for her at a transformed Multi-Purpose Sports Complex on January 17, 2015.
At the stroke of 8pm, Ms Lake, her daughter Suzanne K. Rymer and the other ladies of the family circle who were smartly dressed in red, and the men in smartly attired black suits, all walked into the hall of the facility as it went up with loud rounds of applause.
During that time the very talented Kamau A. Georges and Dalan M. Vanterpool kept the hall warm with their appropriately entertaining music on the saxophone with contemporary and modern jazz style musical entertainment and backed up periodically by a special disc jockey.
The family that prays
Ms Lake and her family members sat at a specially set table where persons had the opportunity to meet, greet and give her their wishes personally.
It was a night that she did not take to the microphone but her outpouring of tears spoke for her. Constantly consoled by her loved ones, Ms Lake sat and listened to the many encouraging remarks. Tears soon filled the eyes of the birthday woman when Ms Brenda Vanterpool spoke of Ms Lake as ‘The family woman’.
Ms Vanterpool described her dear friend as a gifted and blessed lady, one who wears many hats but the one she values most is that of being a mother to her three children- her only daughter Susanne and two boys Marvin and Alex.
The presence and importance of prayer in the family structure of Ms Lake was also underscored as an excellent quality of hers. She was said to have been the mother that ensured she taught her children how to and the value of prayers. This is something that has even passed down to her grandchildren and one at the tender age of five took to opening the night's proceedings with the Lord’s prayer, flawlessly.
“When Pasty talks these days politicians listen”
Another that spoke was Mr Wendell M. Gaskin, who underscored the value of Ms Lake to the Virgin Islands as he said she has been involved emotionally and physically in the development of the VI territory. “Patsy is a political icon in this territory,” said Mr Gaskin. “When Pasty talks these days politicians listen,” he added.
He further described her as a committed businesswoman and a friend of the old creed, “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. He too was mesmerised by the transformation of the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex as he said it was the most magical nights in the history of the Virgin Islands.
Toasts were moved by three persons; Ms Morvina Fahie who said when she entered the building she thought it was a cruise ship, it was like heaven and the most beautiful ever seen in the VI. The other to move a toast was Mr Omar W. Hodge whose words were few but emotionally said, “...this is tremendously beautiful” and Mrs Irene Penn-O’Neal who spoke of her being inspired by Ms Lake and that it has accounted for her being a successful businesswoman today in the VI.
Many others described Ms Lake as ‘Pasty the contractor’, Patsy the woman who is always building, Patsy the diva with a twinkle in the eye and a pleasant smile, Patsy the woman that can fit a 4ft building in a 3ft space of land, Patsy the woman who transformed the landscape of Road Town, Pasty the woman that seems to have a transformer in her being that has a direct connection to God, Patsy that can turn water into wine and Patsy the epitome of royalty.
Ms Lake a national hero
Ms Lake is recognised in Virgin Islands’ history as a national hero having been at the forefront in the fight alongside Noel Lloyd and the Positive Action Movement to preserve Wickham’s Cay and Anegada lands from being taking away from the people through the famous Bates Hill Agreement.
This agreement would have seen the lands being leased to a UK Company for 99 years, shutting out locals from having access for the development and economic benefits of such areas.
Ms Patsy Lake is one of the few women who risked their lives to fight for the rights of Virgin Islanders and continue to have influence on the political stage in the Virgin Islands.
