ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – In an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online, Miss BVI 2013 Rosanna K. Chichester revealed that she had determined prior to competing on pageant night that she would push until she succeeded and expressed that she was overwhelmed by the level of support that she had received.

“When I came out after the introduction dance and I saw the overwhelming support from the audience, it pushed me to excel even more because people came out with the expectation that you would make them proud and represent them well… and I made up my mind to do nothing less than that,” she said.

With pageantry experience that dates back several years to a church summer camp held in Anguilla in 2005, Rosanna has racked up other successes in pageants around the Caribbean and within the shores of the Virgin Islands that paved the way for her win in last Sunday’s Miss BVI Pageant.

Rosanna secured the Miss Popularity, Best BVI Promotion, Miss Photogenic, Miss Poise, Best Swimwear, Best Culture and Historical Costume, Best Talent, Best Evening Wear and Miss Intellect prizes on pageant night at the Multi-Purpose Complex on August 4, 2013.

She previously won Miss Teen BVI in 2007; copped the Miss Photogenic Prize in the 2007 Miss Digicel Talented Teen Pageant held in St Kitts and participated in the Miss Jaycees Caribbean Queen in Antigua in 2008 before entering the Miss BVI Pageant this year.

She stated that her petite size was never considered to be a hindrance and she never felt intimidated because of it as she may be small in stature but was tall on confidence. “For me, what helped me to look tall was my confidence that I always portrayed at every event,” she said, “sometimes your physical height may be short, but your confidence makes you stand out and look so tall…”

Rosanna, who currently works at CIBC First Caribbean International Bank as a Sales Support Officer in the Loans Department, described her preparations for the pageant as being quite tedious and filled with hard preparation through late nights and early mornings.

The newly crowned queen said she started strategizing on how to execute her performance sometime last year and revealed that her goal in participating was to come up with a few creative ideas for some things that had never been done before in the Miss BVI pageant or any other for that matter.

“I wanted to work as hard as I could to sweep up as many as the segments as I could to try to make history as well,” she said before adding that she felt that she had achieved this goal.

Rosanna also disclosed that she has always considered herself an ambassador of the Virgin Islands and has always wanted to continue representing the Territory adding that this was one of the reasons that compelled her to enter the pageant. “Even without a pageantry title or any other title given, I would always tell people I’m an ambassador of the BVI,” she said.

She is also the Treasurer of the BVI Cancer Society and an active member of the First Caribbean International Bank’s Awareness Committee which raises funds and brings awareness in partnering with the Cancer Society and the Family Support Network.

The petite queen said she is also keen on self-enhancement practices and supports youth empowerment causes while being involved in groups such as Toastmasters BVI and a member of the Teen Talk Crew which takes the ZBVI airwaves each Saturday. Rosanna is also one of the dance leaders at her church, The New Testament Church of God.

Her talent piece at the pageant saw her playing the cello which segued seamlessly into a floor dance routine followed by an aerial silk dance. The dances were comprised of ballet, interpretive and acrobatic dance routines.

“I did not [enter the pageant] to get involved in the community because I am already [involved] in the community,” she expressed, “I saw the Miss BVI as a broader avenue to get even more involved.” She felt the Miss BVI Committee could serve as a vehicle to help push forward some of the creative ideas for young people that she already possessed. She also felt that the scholarship she received as one of her prizes would further allow her to give back even more to the community upon her return.

Speaking about her response to the final question during the pageant, Rosanna expressed that the issue of violence among youth had hit close to home for her since she had lost a close friend to gun violence and she responded from the heart in giving her answer on pageant night.

The question was "What bothers you most about what is happening in the British Virgin Islands today? How do you think the Government, the religious community or we the people can address the situation with the goal of eradicating it?"

Rosanna said it bothered her tremendously that youths who display much potential in life often end up turning to a life of crime. In her response, she had offered that youths within the community can be taught approaches on how to excel in life in order to avoid turning to a life of crime.

Her greatest challenge along the way, she disclosed, was securing sponsorship and she expressed gratitude to the companies that came to her assistance including the National Bank of the Virgin Islands, the Skelton Group of Companies, NAGICO Insurances, Bob’s Gas Station and the many members of the community. She felt the sponsors saw the drive and determination that allowed them to invest in her and offer their support and were extremely proud and ultimately vindicated when she won the title.

One of the prizes she won was a scholarship which she indicated she plans to use to pursue a career as a Paediatrician following her reign.

She further disclosed that her heritage was also not a consideration as she was born and raised on Tortola and this has been her home and will always remain her home. She said it was important to be able to build a thick skin as not everyone would always be supportive in life but she found it unfortunate that she was singled out because her parents are Belongers to the Territory.

She wasnt my favorite coming in to the pageant, but she immediately, from the beginning of the show, made me had a change of heart. Of the 4, she is the most qualified to represent the BVI; it doesnt matter where her parents are from, she is a born BVIslander and we should all embrace her as such. Congrats on your well deserved win, Rosanna. God bless you always.

I to just watch the show on TV and the first runner-up should have won best gown and Miss Intellect. I really am not backing anyone because truth be told they don't do much for the community after they win.

The replay on JTV is quite obvious. No overly sexual bed antics and brazin split to show her goods for the crowd to judge. Princess Jasmine's chaperones should be ashamed of themselves for that overly sexual performance. I felt like I was at a strip club!

That's probably why they took such a beating...

    Congrats #4
