ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- As the whisper for Governor John S. Duncan OBE to be recalled is quietly gaining some momentum, and controversial talk show host Edmund G. Maduro a former Chief Immigration Officer labeling him as a “racist”, our newsroom posed a series of questions to Her Majesty’s representative in the Virgin Islands.

What is racism?

When asked by our newsroom if he is a racist as suggested by Mr Maduro, in a written response emailed to our newsroom, Governor Duncan defined Racism or Prejudice, as “discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.”

Mr Duncan said “this has been one of humanity’s greatest scourges.”  He went on in his written response to our newsroom to claim “as someone who spent his formative years in Africa and who has lived and worked in many countries I have seen racism in many forms.”

In further dodging the answer to the question as to whether he is a racist, the unpopular Governor said “it appears to be a misconception in some quarters that racism is only a white on black phenomenon. The southern Sudanese, the people of Rwanda, or the Albanian Kosovars know through the bloodshed in their countries in the past two decades that nothing could be further from the truth.”

Governor Duncan: The BVI is racist

Furthermore, instead of keeping the focused on answering to the charge of him being a racist, as alleged by Edmund Maduro, Mr Duncan claimed that “I am saddened to observe the extent of casual racism and discrimination in the BVI, in media commentary and more widely amongst the three broad communities that make up our population. I do not believe it reflects the traditional values of the BVI. It certainly does not reflect modern multicultural Britain.”

The readers will note that Governor Duncan still has not directly answered the question, but said in his final answer on the topic that “Mr Maduro can naturally exercise his right to freedom of speech, but the three medals I am entitled to wear from the UK, US and NATO tell a very different story about my own personal convictions and the extent I am prepared to defend them.”

When told today April 20, 2016 of the Governor’s response to his allegation, Mr Maduro said what he understands the governor to be saying is that “because he lived and work in Africa he is not racist, however, it does not mean he is not a racist…South Africa is a country in Africa and they had the biggest racist system ever on the continent call Apartheid, so what is this man saying to us?”

Mr Maduro said he would not comment further until he sees the full answers from Mr Duncan. The talk show host has called since last year for Governor Duncan to be recalled, as according to Mr Maduro, he has “no regards for the constitution and the people have lost confidence in him.”

Too Little, Too Late. Our perceptions of him have already been made. The only thing left for him now is to finish his term and "adieu."

while I support, even fight for the environment, preservation, anti-bullying, contribute to education and other issues, I sadly have to say that I ran up against racism in the Natural Resources and Labour office when discussing the new park- Smugglers/ Belmont. I was immediately judged because I am white and was derogatorily lumped with "them"- meaning people who live in Belmont (where I do not). It was quite clear "them" were white. I was shocked after being here almost 40 yrs.

You have your ancestors to blame for that. They created the system of racism (notice I said system,) and have a history of destruction and genocide in every part of the planet.

so let's carry on the "system" because it was there before. When does it stop? Why does wanting to preserve YOUR history become my issue? you should be doing it yourself. But no- "this is how we do it in the BVI".

We are not in any. Position to change the system which is set in place to benefit you. I don't sympathize with any white person claiming to be the victim of racism.

We live in a world where "black" children are being indoctrinated into believing that their history started with slavery and that their race didn't make any contributions to the world, and this couldn't be further from the truth. THATS what systematic racism is.

The system crumbles when black people regain their knowledge of self and realized that they are the originators of civilization.

You got some nerves coming over here with your bs.

John, I thank you for opening up the conversation. They thought we would never be able to read to find out how they stole our legacy. How our people existed 5,000 years before they came up with the religion of Judiasm. They were not the creators of religion. They fooled our people when they brought them into slavery telling us about streets of gold and milk and honey. They went down to Egypt and copied our religion off the walls of the pyramids. They too have been brainwashed because they don't know their thiefing ancestors started the racism. When they went to Africa and saw the people living like real Kings and Queens, they started their jealousy how to take it away from them. Europe learned about Monarchy from Africa. Solomon, etc., they raided his temple, too much to talk man, but we are reading now.

Long story short, many come here from South Africa, UK and the like with the same racist behaviour, and if we don't wake up and see they are trying to do the same thing here, but we must not let them. Leaders must be smart and plan for our future. If we as a country do not move away from being an Overseas Territory of Great Britian, those bastards' aim is to enslave us again.
Wake up, people, this is what is brewing. We don't go to UK to be third class citizens. Let them stay up there in their 300 year-old flats. A bunch of jealous Edomites, can't live peacefully with no one. Let them all go to Mars. We will be happy without them, as we once were. Wicked generation of Vipers!

Not sure that this system remains within the control of the white British. If you want to change it, do so.

Also, you are entirely correct that there is history pre-slavery (and during the time of slavery but not merely as slaves) for "black" people. A lot of this has been lost which is devastating, but there is also historical documentation to be found. A couple of small points - with the generalist comments about ancestors being genocidal and all white men being tarnished for eternity with the stain of slavery, bear in mind (i) that some "black" history also includes conflict, conquest and general bad boy behaviour and (ii) that there is a deep involvement of "black" people in the slave system as slave-owners and suppliers.

"Are you a racist?" What a preposterous question to ask, and what a difficult question to answer! First, define racism. Black/white. Jew/-Arab. Serbs/Croat/Muslim. Tribe/Tribe. Nation/Nation. Indigenous/Colonisers. Hindu/Muslim. Muslim/Muslim. BVISLANDERS/Island people. BVI Crabs/crabs in a barrel. Oh! You dont mean that! You mean White expatriates versus black "I born here". Who is asking? Why do you ask? If you are a black person professing to love everybody, including the person you are asking, and they say "Yes I am a racist", do you still love them, or do you become a racist also, because now you dont love them, because they sat they are a racist. If they say they are not a racist, do you believe them and drop the subject, or do you persist in getting the answer you want, which turns you into a racist. Do you see how preposperous the whole idea is. I suppose a true racist would be someone who had the power to attempt to illiminate another race. Eg Hitler, Pol Pot, Hutus. If you came up against any of them you would not get a chance to ask the question!

What a lot of persons aren't realizing is is that racism is both ways. We as a people act too casual like it's nothing but it's a big deal. Do a self evaluation and ask yourself if you would want some of the things we say, said back to us or about our people. If you are ok with it, then you cannot say anything about racism. This isn't me condoning it, or even condemning the governor because I just don't know, but if you want to cleanse the place of that disease, you have to start with yourself.

Most people are intrinsically selfish, dishonest and exploitative of one another. They have their preferences and prejudices which come naturally and act out accordingly. Unfortunately one sees a lot of black on black "racism" and "discrimination right here in this country. While, on the other hand, the so called no breed black expacts are usually assisted in their problematic times by some so called white racists. In this day and age, I strongly advocate harmony and unity among all classes, races, genders and ages of people. Life is too short to waste it on being greedy, dishonest, exploitative, corrupt, money and power driven, and or petty towards each other.

Listen to the blogs, sum up the story, many black people in the Virgin Islands are aware of white racism, have opened their eyes that some change must come or a greater white supremacy racism with raise it's ugly head. Many whites know that blacks are not ignorant and foolish anymore and are watching the situation closely.
And I say, there are some of us of colour who will die for the cause, but we will never be put in chains again by the white master, we have started to fight already. Listen to our words, we are not joking. In this day and age, why are we still praising the hands that oppressed up and enslaved us?

summingitup: I take it by saying"praising the hands that oppressed" you are referring to the church? This is the biggest joke that there is in the BVI you want to shout out at all the white racists yet neglect to remember that they introduced the church to keep all their slaves in line, and so many still toe that line and claim its real WTF!
