ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - At this time of the year many discussions, opinions, recommendations and even criticisms are a norm when it comes to the celebration of Emancipation in the Virgin Islands (UK).

Even respected legislators, past and present share their thoughts about whether or not revelers of the August Monday Parade should be prancing in the street "half naked."

Then there are talks about whether or not the celebrations should be centralised, eliminating the activities at both the eastern and western ends of the territory.

Another topic that recently surfaced publicly is the presence of children into the wee morning hours at adult rated events.

Let’s not forget concerns about early pay for vendors, the costs to enter villages, parking situations, the real facts about the Sunday Morning Well and the Proclamation of Emancipation, the depiction of true Virgin Islands history, significance of Nottingham Estate and the Long Look End Stickett, and whether the VI Festivals and Fairs Committee should be independent of the Ministry of Culture and free of political influences are just a few.

Everybody bussing off

On the other hand, there is the topic that's trending now that saw Sixth District Representative, Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines contributing to the social media discourse, saying "Well look story everybody bussing off," with sighing face and rolling eyes emojis.

It all stemmed from a post by one Nicky Drummer Girl, who is known to us as Nichole A. Wheatley, seeking information for available flights out of Tortola destined for Anguilla at a time when the Emancipation festivities are expected to be in full swing.

This conversation gave rise to the fact that at this time many VIslanders, even many leaders and prominent ones, leave the territory for the USA, UK and even other fellow Caribbean countries to sometimes participate in the festivities of other countries.

Giving reason for her wanting to leave, Ms Wheatley alluded to the standard of the local festivities, noting that planning needs to start earlier. "The problem is we have people in place who feel they know it all and the little man's suggestions don't count point blank! As festival finish give by at least October - November and hold your first meeting."

Hon Maduro-Caines responded, "I totally understand where you are coming from."

Commenting further Ms Wheatley said, "....thats why I would forever say education and culture/festival are two big giants to deal with and should be separated. Why have backbenchers? No need to respond to my thoughts."

I have been to skb , Antigua all places that they claimed had better festival and its not true. The difference is in the people and how they participate, our village and setting is much better than those places so stop the BS!!

Culture needs to be separated from Education, Cultural/Historical events should be a year round thing, you only hear about Culture during Festival time, is not that the proper people are not in place?

Well u see, when u doin the same ish every year for one, Government not payin the local bands etc so they are reluctant to perform, every body complainin about the parade costumes yet runnin to pay thousands to jump up in others own, everything about festival will dwindle because ppl are no longer interested, every year is a new set of complaints from older heads, if u ain jumpin up relax yaself stay home and watch TBN....festival is no longer a spectacle, it is not ENTERTAINING, the place is usually quiet most of the year that's what ppl look forward to.... and look at what its come down to.
