BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has warned that new European Union (EU) vaccine exports rules and pressures on AstraZeneca to deliver vaccines to European Union (EU) member countries could impact the supply of vaccine to the Virgin Islands (VI).

“They have demands in their own country on this… so they have announced that they will disrupt the supply to the United Kingdom, that may well have consequences for us,” he said.

EU moves in on AstraZeneca to restrict exports

Hon Malone was speaking during an interview on the March 25, 2021, Honestly Speaking radio show with Claude O. Skelton-Cline on ZBVI 780 AM.

Last week, the EU tightened up rules on the exports of COVID-19 vaccines while pressuring vaccine maker AstraZeneca to deliver more shots to the region.

The decision came as the region’s slothful vaccine rollout was placed under the microscope, even as the EU was exporting millions of coronavirus vaccines to outside countries.

7k already vaccinated in VI - Hon Malone

The Health Minister said; however, that despite the possible break in supply of vaccine to the territory, some 7000 people have already been vaccinated in the VI as of March 25, 2021.

He said with 20,000 vaccines made available to the VI, 14,000 doses of the vaccine have been reserved for the first 7000 people.

He said the VI is expecting another 12,000 doses of the vaccine on March 31, 2021, which will allow for the vaccination of additional people in the territory with guaranteed jabs for the first and second doses.

We would have had enough for one shot but the 2 shots is the problem..The two shots is all about money, every shot has a cost, why one company can do it with one shot, it means the research is there for one shot.. I have no problem with taking the vac ine. I have a problem with taking 2 shots... Its greed.

Why aren't the vaccination centers open on Saturday? You could close them on Monday and have them open from Tuesday to Saturday making it easier for people with jobs to get a vaccination. Does this make too much sense?

Mr Malone you know that most of my friends and belongers dont want vaccine as dont trust it so there is no need to get any more. From what I hear there is surplus vaccine as only the work permit holders are having it. Problem is if most belongers dont have the vaccine then there will be no herd immunity and if Covid comes here they will be more sick.
