ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre staged a commemoration luncheon today October 26, 2012 to bring the curtain down on the second annual Mango Array & Tropical Fruit Festival Poetry Competition.

The luncheon began with a brief ceremony which saw a few remarks and performances from various persons involved directly and indirectly with the centre.

The ceremony opened up with a delightful poem delivered by Ms Dian Jeffers, who was the second prize winner in the Adult category of the competition and was followed up by a performance on the French horn by some of students of the centre.

Chief Agricultural Officer, Mr Bevin Brathwaite, said “Youths are the future and indeed, the special needs youths are not to be left out.”

He stated the importance of farming to senior citizens and special needs persons and added that farming is a great way to learn about nature and appreciate the food we eat and to build responsibility.

“The Department continues to recognise the importance of involving the youths in agriculture and the 2013 theme reflects this sentiment,” he said.

The theme, he noted, is “Sustain ourselves and secure our future by training youths in Agriculture.”

The luncheon was the first of many initiatives that the Department of Agriculture will be implementing in the near future for the youths.

These plans include working with several schools in an effort to revitalise their school gardens and also the launching of a poster competition for the primary school students. There will also be a science competition planned for the secondary schools.

Mr. Braithwaite congratulated the students on their achievements and distributed certificates to them at the end of the ceremony.

Many, many moons ago, no one paid attention to this school or these children. I am proud to see that has changed.

The Mango Array Competition was opened to the public incuding all public schools. EHRLC took part in the competition just like other schools regardless of their special needs. They are commended for doing so. The public schools that have students with special needs ought to let them participate also. This is the whole aim of inclusion. They should not be treated differently and not take part in anything thing to include writing poems for competition. So Hmmmmmmm, we can encourage the teachers in the other school to get these children with special needs involve in everything and don't expect EHRLC to take them out for them to be recognised. Let us not underestimate childen with special needs. They can do anything but they need that extra support.
