Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre to be upgraded
This is according to Minister for Education and Culture, Myron Walwyn, who delivered a statement in the House of Assembly on December 19, 2011.
“We know that it will not always be possible to put a child with special needs directly into the general school system as the disability may be too profound to make this approach effective. Therefore, it behoves us Madam Speaker to ensure that the educational programme and facility at the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre are upgraded and outfitted to better help those who attend…. course this means that there will have to be more training for our teachers across the board and we are prepared to invest in this as it is important for the future of our children,” he stated.
The Education Minister noted that his Ministry has realized that there are many gaps, and further stated it is looking closely at this area to “come up with a comprehensive plan with some specific timelines for achievement over the next year.”
“To some it may seem impossible especially when we begin to think of how much still needs to be done and the financial constraints we presently face. With recent years of poor financial mismanagement and prioritisation, it may seem a daunting task. However, with the involvement of all the stakeholders, with all our minds together, we can achieve a lot, we can do much with what is available to us,” Hon. Walwyn added.
The Centre, which opened its doors in 1972, has since served as a school for students with a range of physical, emotional and learning disabilities. Students receive individualized care and are involved in a range of activities such as sailability, vocational/skill programmes, physical education and speech therapy.
