ESHS teacher who fondled 13 year-old is very sick, court hears
This is according to General Surgeon, Marjorie Yee-Sing this morning Friday February 17, 2012 in the Magistrate’s Court.
Evans is currently on remand since November 2011, and is awaiting sentencing by Magistrate Tamia Richards. After a trial that concluded in December 2011 Evans, who was a pastor for 16 years, was found guilty of fondling a then 13 year-old student.
However, while she was examined by Dr. J S Archibald, Dr. Yee-Sing, a medical practitioner since 1978 revealed that Evans is diagnosed with full blown Sickle Cell, which he has since he was younger.
The doctor, who was at Peebles from 1994 to 2011, told the court that the defendant has infection of the bones, which is difficult to treat, and has affected both of Evans’ feet. In 2010, she told the court that Evans was admitted to Peebles Hospital with ulcers to both of his feet oozing with pus. Surgery was carried out to “somewhat” clear the infection.
During that period in the hospital, doctors found that Evans had a large liver, irregular heart beats, an enlarged prostate and gall stones.
“Sickle cells can lead to stroke and cardiac failure, which can lead to death,” Dr. Yee-Sing further stated.
In February 2011, Evan was re-admitted for infection to his feet, and was given intravenous antibiotics. He underwent surgery as well.
Then in December 2011, the defendant was again admitted for severe anemia, high potassium in the blood, gall stone, high white cell count and urinary tract infection.
Therefore, due to Evans’ complicated medical history, Dr. Yee-Sing opined that it would have been better if he was not in prison. She explained to the court that if Evans was experiencing a painful crisis, he would have to be treated promptly or he could die.
She also noted that because the prison is on a hill and the temperatures are cold would not be conducive to Evans’ condition, coupled with the fact that the prison Nurse is not available round the clock and a doctor only visit once per week.
After reeling out the medical complications Evans face, the veteran doctor posited that it would be prudent for the former teacher be properly monitored and noted that his illness is very expensive.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Richards asked Dr. Yee-Sing if the drugs needed to ease Evans’ pain can be administered by the prison nurse. In response the doctor stated that it will have to be under lock and key, and the nurse will have to get an order from the doctor.“If the drug is not given in the right manner it can cause complications,” Dr. Yee-Sing added.
She also reiterated that Davis to be kept comfortable at the prison and will need a plethora of medical supplies including an oxygen tank, be given the right foods, kept warm hence the need for an electrical blanket, dressing sets for his wounds, a suction machine, among others.
Dr. Heskith Vanterpool of Eureka Medical Lab also testified.
The matter is adjourned until Monday, February 20, 2012.
