ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A 15-year-old student of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) who came close to death’s door during a collision earlier this year was fined $1000 for various traffic violations.

Magistrate Ayanna O. Baptiste-DaBreo imposed the fines when the schoolboy made his maiden appearance before the Magistrate’s Court in John’s Hole on Monday, September 23, 2019.

Prosecutors said the minor collided with a jeep when it was making a turn into the R&R Malone Complex in Pockwood Pond, Tortola, at about 8:21am on January 29 2019.

As a consequence, the scooter, which was not licensed, insured or had any front and back identification plates, was thrown in one direction where it burst into flames.

The student, who was too young to own a driver’s licence, was tossed in the opposite direction and received injuries as a result.

After being treated for his injuries, the ESHS student was charged with the multiple offences.

Following his guilty plea, the court imposed a fine of $100 for driving an unlicensed vehicle.

Additionally, the schoolboy was fined$500 for driving an uninsured vehicle, $200 for driving without a driver’s license, $100 for not having a front identification plate and another $100 for not having a rear identification plate affixed to the scooter.

Magistrate DaBreo gave him up to October 23, 2019 to pay the fines.

Just interested, he’s only fifteen so that’s under age, what penalties can he face if he cannot pay the fines???

Let his parents pay, that's all. Maybe if we take this approach, persons would stop raising the lose canons we see in society with no respect for God nor man.

most time parents are out working hard to support these children and have not a clue what some of them are doing. Most time parents raise their children well but following bad company make this seems like they dont.

He should be made to get a after school job or weekend job to pay this fine. His parents knew he was riding that bike, so if he can't pay, they will, since he is still a minor. He is lucky to be alive and that should be a lesson learned.

@NezRed How do you know that his parents know that he was riding the bike?

The result of bad parenting. Hit the parents below the belt and send a clear message to the other scooter riders. NHI need to wake up and stop absorbing these costs!

you cant blame everything on the parents - whilst upbringing can be a factor we need to look at the wider system - why are these kids not in school - why do we see the same kids riding recklessly through town, no helmets day after day - its just lawlessness that teaches them that they can get away with it and then move on to badder things. its time to sort this out.

I am appreciating your comment so much. This is why ESHS is ensuring that the children adhere to the school rules. Wearing the correct uniform helps to address issues of lawlessness. So for all those who continue to ask and argue about what the skirt length has to do with education. Leaving children to themselves without having these structures in place and having adults who are not in support of these measures to curb lawlessness results in the development of such cultures... open defiance, disrespect, disregard for laws...

Well sah, age 15 is good age to go look a weekend job and get going with your life pal...parents need to instill in their you teenage boys to develop the love for work from an early age, thus the easy transition into manhood to shoulder responsibilities well and contribute to society in a meaningful way...
