ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith, in a public broadcast on radio and television last night May 4, 2015, sought to give an outline of his National Democratic Party (NDP) Government’s performance since taking office in November 2011, claiming that his Government has re-established the Virgin Islands economy on a firm footing and for that reason should be given another four year term.

He also downplayed talk that the recent approving of land for residents and last minute road works are election gimmicks, saying they were "foolish" talks by naysayers.

The Premier once again made the cry that the former government, the Virgin Islands Party, had left the country broke and it was his government that had to restore the territory's finances even though he stayed away from bringing actual figures to prove his case, and has failed to do so in the House of Assembly also.

“We must build on the successes of past leaders and with each successive generation improve our infrastructure, grow our economy, protest our environment and raise our standard of living and quality of life. This means hard work and determined vigilance on our part and it sometimes means taking tough decisions that will pay dividends in the future especially when those decisions may not be popular initially,” he said.

“Ladies and gentlemen, my Government has demonstrated that we are able to manage your affairs. We believe that we are your best hope for the future prosperity, stability and best hope for the BVI,” he said.

A fallen economy

Premier Smith, in his lengthy speech that sought to glorify his party ahead of general electons, said that three and a half years ago his Government was elected and it met an economy which was in a fallen state and which the NDP was able to put on a successful path of growth and prosperity. “I am grateful to you for your confidence in us. We have moved beyond those dark days.”

He acknowledged that there are those among us who are experiencing homelessness and to this the Government must never turn a blind eye. “We will continues to do all that is in our power to take people off the streets and place them in homes,” he said.

Building national pride

Premier Smith noted that his Government is determined to improve not just health care but also to make steps in improving culture and education programmes for young people while at the same time building national pride and not forgetting the nation’s history.

In saying this, Premier Smith said that it was his party just months after taking Government in 2011 that set out to create the national dress and territorial song.

“It is fair to say that the progress that we have made in education over the years mirror the progress we have made in the wider economy. Ladies and gentleman, much has been accomplished,” he said.

He spoke of the steps made in terms of the technical school and the job fairs that the Government has hosted in partnership with the private sector. He said too that in three short years his Government has made excellent progress in the field of sports.

Turning to fisheries and agriculture, the NDP boss said Government is doing its best to upgrade facilities where possible. He said the greenhouse will commence production in the last quarter of 2015.

Ignore the foolish talk

Premier Smith spoke of Government’s allocation of house lots in Virgin Gorda. “I urge you, the newest land recipients, to ignore the foolish talk of the naysayers who can only see my Government’s hard work as an elections gimmick. Yet another childish attempt to criticise this Government for helping the people to improve their livelihood,” he argued.

The land in Virgin Gorda is an election gimmick. The people got promissory letters just like Devorn Osborne got from VIP in 2011. If it's not a gimmick why didn't your Government honour his? The Belongers letters are also election gimmick. Why people waited so long for their letters and all of a sudden they getting calls Monday and Tuesday?
One thing we do understand that is why the House was dissolved so sudden. Pleading with us will not work this time around. At least all of you have promising careers, good luck with them.

The NDP in 3 1/2 has taken the bvi from better to worse, the BVI is broke, government cheque bouncing all over the place, government owe 90 million in debts to small business and service providers inside and outside of the bvi, the hospital banker up, can't pay it bills, owe all of its creditors, don't have money to buy medical supplies and critical care medicine for patients, in every country all over the world businesses are always willing to do business with government because they know that such investment guarantee sure pay but in the bvi under the NDP, this country has loss credibility, businesses inside and outside of the bvi are refusing to do business with this government because they do not pay their bills, and when they do pay companies are receiving bounce cheque, in 3 1/2 years the NDP has spent 100 million of tax payers money with out giving account of one cent to the people of this country, in 3 1/2 years we have a government begging the citizen of this country for financial support insteda of government offering financial assistance to the citizen to alleviate their financial burden, in 3 1/2 years of the NDP administration we are blacked listed for financial irregularity( money laundering) and drug trafficking by US and France, in 3 1/2 years many businesses have closed their doors and relocated to other countries, while other has lay off workers, in 301/2 years tax payers have not receive one cent increase in wages and salaries but the NDP ministers income and perks is escalating, tax increasing, cost of living increasing, plight of the people increasing, crime increasing, people struggling to make ends meet to the next pay cheque, in 3 1/2 years, the public servants has been dismiss, abuse, marginalize, victimize & sexually harass, in 3 1/2 years the criterion for having a job or keeping your job in the public service has change from qualification and experience to being a family, friend or supporter of the NDP, these are some of the progress made but the NDP over the 3 1/2 years

the problem with ndp is they like to do the big flashy project but forget that all the people want is the little things like, a hike in the minimum wage, lower food and rent prices, a steady and reliable supply of our utilities especially water and electricity its not rocket science give me 75 percent of these and i'd vote for anybody

I spoke to a number of people yesterday who received belongers status and they have informed me that, they received telephone calls from a certain Dr informing them to up lift their belongers card at the premier office, and when the arrive the certain Dr is giving out these belongers card to the people and asking them to vote for the NDP because of the favor he has given them. Let me set the record straight this is down right low and disgraceful, these people are not been granted a favor by the NDP government, these people came to this country and pay their dues, they made their contribution to the development of this country hence their belonger card is as of right not a favor, these people has attain the rights like every other bvi lander to vote for a party of their choice who they believe would take the bvi in the right direction, it make no sense having a belonger card and can't enjoy a good quality of life in the bvi after working so hard and making sacrifice for the development of this nation, you have earn the right to choose and you must choose wisely because your decision would affect your future and your children future for years to come. I am not telling you how to vote but I am advising you not be co-horse by a certain Dr and the NDP to vote for them because of some favor you received, its not a favor, its your rights. Vote wisely, vote for progress, vote for change, vote for security and prosperity of the bvi.

I sincerely hope that this charge can be verified. It is one thing if a supporter tries to get the newbie's vote, but, quite another if the premier does this. Not quite honorable, is it?!!!!

Why are Police treated so much more important than Nurses--Police are Pensionable, Get their belongs rights, get rights to vote, when Nurses are denied all these benefits---Police deals with criminal they can hardly catch--Nurses deals with infection they can easily catch--(Maybe the difference is that the Police don`t have a board to oppress them)

@ the builder. For your information the NDP government is not in support of the police force, I believe they are not to concern about law and order. They are the only government that continue to cut the police budget. And on another note, when you start to come forward with the little information you have, then it will assist the police in getting to the criminals

I just don't understand why the NDP administration is continue saying that the VIP administration left the country broke and when them went in to office them sign big contracts 3 weeks later. Doc, I think you are not saying the truth regarding to why you dissolved the HOA but the people will know that 2 of your members would have to step-down and that would look bad on you and the NDP administration. Again, we have now seen the country going through an election trick with all these dam projects.. Our farmers and fishermen & women have been ignored and forgotten. Doc, you really think the people of this country can handle another 4 years of your administration? ,, HELL NO, dam it the NDP has to go.
