Election Day in the VI is June 8, 2015
The highly anticipated announcement was made by Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith at the National Democratic Party (NDP) campaign launch at the Road Town Market Square this evening May 6, 2015.
The announcement comes days after the House of Assembly was dissolved on May 1, 2015.
According to Premier Smith, he will be requesting that date from Governor John S. Duncan tomorrow, May 7, 2015.
Earlier, the various candidates on the NDP slate introduced themselves to the public.
VIP ready; early elections disservice to territory
Chairman of the Virgin Islands (VIP) Party Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) had previously said the VIP was anticipating early elections given the flurry of activity that has been taking place over the past few days, including last minute road works, approval of lands for residents and the opening of the expanded cruise pier.
Noting that the Virgin Islands Party will be prepared to contest the next general elections, said Hon Fraser said the territory had up to February 2016 to call elections and the snap elections announced is a disservice to the territory given that there are so many things left undone. "The administration had three years and six months to resolve the water distribution issue…they have a number of infrastructure road works going on, none of which is close to completion,” he said.
Hon Fraser also spoke about the landside development of the cruise pier development project, noting that not all of the financing has been found. He said that with the territory possibly going into another administration it is a mystery as to where the balance of the funding is coming from for this project.
He said according his mathematics, the landside phase of the project is slated to cost $21 million and so far just about $9 million has been raised through loans and sale of debentures, leaving more than half of the project cost yet to be secured.
NDP out of ploys to deceive the people
Representative for the First District Hon Andrew A. Fahie said Government have called early elections because they have run out of ploys to deceive the people. He denounced the move by the Government saying that there are millions yet unaccounted for in the House of Assembly.
“Simply put, we called this long ago. The Government has run out of wool to pull over the people's eyes hence the need to abruptly call the general elections before the people find out what is really going on in our country,” he said.
He noted that the true state of the country is far more than what meets the eye. “It is totally irresponsible for the NDP Government to call elections without accounting to the House of Assembly for over one hundred million dollars of over-expenditures and other non-budgeted financial transactions. Many other concerns exist although they continue to try to programme the people's mind otherwise,” he had said.
The last general election in the Virgin Islands was held on November 7, 2011 following the dissolution of the House of Assembly on September 13, 2011 by the then Governor, Mr William Boyd McCleary.
The Opposition National Democratic Party won 9 seats as against 4 by the then ruling Virgin Islands Party (VIP).

Do you understand English? There is something called inference. In your words "THEY PIKED UP NEAR THE END OF THE TWO MONTHS DEADLINE" Bully for them!
The question is why not pick up toward the end of the 3-months deadline? HOW GENEROUS!
Misinformed, INDEED! Again, back to INFERENCE. If you bother to read and understand the meaning of what is meant when I said "IF YOU ARE SERIOUS, YOU WILL GIVE PEOPLE TIME TO FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH THE ISSUES" AND THEN POINTED OUT "BUT THEY GOT TO KNOW WHAT THE ISSUES ARE IN THE FIRST PLACE".
If you are referring to the platforms of the different parties, then what you say supports what I wrote. However, if you are talking about your assumption that this writer does not know anything about the Parliamentary System, then, YOU ARE WAY OFF THE MARK. The issue is WHY THE RUSH? If the Opposition did the same I would ask the same question.
To the person who mentioned 2011, I suggest that you check your facts. The government of the day did not dissolve parliament before the end of term of office. The fact is that, under the constitution, before any new election takes place, parliament (House of Assembly) must be dissolved, whether it is end of term of office or whether it is a snap election
The reality is:
(1) Parliament was dissolved (Right of ruling party, okay).
(2) New voters were given a limited amount of time to register (No absentee registration or voting allowed). Too bad if you are/had to be/ have to be away!
(3) Though, after the dissolution of parliament, it is the right of the ruling party to call for the election 21-90 days post-dissolution, the question remains why is election not set at end of the maximum time allowed.
(4)PERCEPTION or CREDIBILITY dictate that the NDP should understand that because of the above, as well as all the recent goings on, it could be hurting its case. While not blaming any individual, the truth is that perception /perceptual credibility has a lot to do with how some people vote.
(5) Unfortunately, there are some people who are going to vote around personality, personal likes and dislike. We need to be INFORMED VOTERS.
(6) Never said I made up my mind who is going to get my vote. Noting personal (I don't know you), but reading comprehension is important, I SAID I KNOW WHO I AM NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR (GOES BACK TO THE ISSUE OF CREDIBILITY/PERCEPTION).
(7) EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO DEFEND THE CHOSEN PARTY, but, you run the risk of others questioning your party WHEN YOU DON’T INTELLIGENTLY DO SO.
(8) You got the guts to say that politicians are pulling the wool over my eyes- What politician? How? When? Talk for yourself, please, please!!
REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU POINT A FINGER AT A PERSON, AT LEAST THREE ARE POINTING BACK AT YOU.
Mind what some of you asking for you going get
