ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- (Post Time: 10:25pm) Just as the Opposition Virgin Islands Party had predicted following the sudden dissolution of the House of Assembly, the Virgin Islands electorate will be heading to the polls on June 8, 2015 to choose their government for the next four years.

The highly anticipated announcement was made by Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith at the National Democratic Party (NDP) campaign launch at the Road Town Market Square this evening May 6, 2015.

The announcement comes days after the House of Assembly was dissolved on May 1, 2015.

According to Premier Smith, he will be requesting that date from Governor John S. Duncan tomorrow, May 7, 2015.

Earlier, the various candidates on the NDP slate introduced themselves to the public.

VIP ready; early elections disservice to territory

Chairman of the Virgin Islands (VIP) Party Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) had previously said the VIP was anticipating early elections given the flurry of activity that has been taking place over the past few days, including last minute road works, approval of lands for residents and the opening of the expanded cruise pier.

Noting that the Virgin Islands Party will be prepared to contest the next general elections, said Hon Fraser said the territory had up to February 2016 to call elections and the snap elections announced is a disservice to the territory given that there are so many things left undone. "The administration had three years and six months to resolve the water distribution issue…they have a number of infrastructure road works going on, none of which is close to completion,” he said.

Hon Fraser also spoke about the landside development of the cruise pier development project, noting that not all of the financing has been found. He said that with the territory possibly going into another administration it is a mystery as to where the balance of the funding is coming from for this project.

He said according his mathematics, the landside phase of the project is slated to cost $21 million and so far just about $9 million has been raised through loans and sale of debentures, leaving more than half of the project cost yet to be secured.

NDP out of ploys to deceive the people

Representative for the First District Hon Andrew A. Fahie said Government have called early elections because they have run out of ploys to deceive the people. He denounced the move by the Government saying that there are millions yet unaccounted for in the House of Assembly.

“Simply put, we called this long ago. The Government has run out of wool to pull over the people's eyes hence the need to abruptly call the general elections before the people find out what is really going on in our country,” he said.

He noted that the true state of the country is far more than what meets the eye. “It is totally irresponsible for the NDP Government to call elections without accounting to the House of Assembly for over one hundred million dollars of over-expenditures and other non-budgeted financial transactions. Many other concerns exist although they continue to try to programme the people's mind otherwise,” he had said.

The last general election in the Virgin Islands was held on November 7, 2011 following the dissolution of the House of Assembly on September 13, 2011 by the then Governor, Mr William Boyd McCleary.

The Opposition National Democratic Party won 9 seats as against 4 by the then ruling Virgin Islands Party (VIP).

This move is a great disservice to the people of the BVI. It seem that NDP is playing like the Rush Hour of the Gods. If you are serious, you will give people time to familiarize themselves with the issues. But they got to know what the issues are in the first place. Since the NDP has called for the dissolution of Parliament, it should have the decency to give people as much time as possible. Now you turn around and give them a month. You going some place? Whats the rush? All this rushing makes people believe that what they saying about the NDP must be true.

Thanks for making my mind up. I know who not to vote for. May you meet with the same fate as other wise guys in the Caribbean recently have!

First you need to learn your constitution. Once the house is dissolved the election must be held no later than two months after it is dissolved and not earlier than 21 days. So the date they picked is right near the end of the two months deadline. You made up ur mind and you are still misinformed. That is exactly why the politians could pull wool over your eyes

Just remember people that the civil servants are yet without their increments since the NDP got power. Only their cronies in the party got. Are you willing to vote a government who try to starve your children?

No Increments pass out in the private sector either. It has nothing to do with the Government. Learn to live within your means and don't hang you cap where you can't reach it.

So should I live within my means bringing home $460.00 twice a month? Got to buy food, car insurance is my whole pay check, sick and can't afford to go to the doctor because I don't have insurance, got to pay cable, pay light bill...tell me how to live above my means where buying a soda is a luxury..

Take it upon yourself to look at every candidate for what they stand for and say they are going to do to work for all the people. The two major parties have flipped power back and forth for 2 decades for a reason: They have lost their sense of purpose for the greater good. It is truly a time for sweeping change.

BVI people Come On!! dont be blind! look at the progress BVI has been since the NDP was re-elected again. what i see with the NDP they made bad judgements in the past and now they're ready with a brighter future and i think we should let them remain in there seats!. Reason being their actions speaks louder than VIP statements/Opinions in the past term when they was in and even now still. i Really dont have a problem with the VIP i just feel that they're working on something else other than whats best for the community or they're working on seeing how much money they can save alone!! and thats all i see they criticize NDP about what they're doing and the money they're spending Smh (shake my head) come on VIP focus on how you can make the community better and not run the tire with nails and steel in it because you trying to save money to have like Dubai. to the VIP members if you feel like you dont like your partys vision anymore , Come to NDP nothing is wrong with that we will accept you to help us take this country to a better healthier Enviroment!!!!

VOTE NDP people I know you have favourites, families and friends. I totally understand that, just vote whats best for the country, Guys i know it has things you dont like from the NDP example insurance wise but dont make that their biggest down fall. like that phrase "i do a million good things and one bad or disagreement and then im the evil black mamba of all time" things can change trust me,dont make everything about yourself only , think about the community where you live everything , Have a great day everyone and give NDP more time to do more good

    VOTE NDP

    Belonger Of The BVI,
    **** ******

I very well know what the Constitution says. It is not the voting public who called for the dissolution of Parliament.

Do you understand English? There is something called inference. In your words "THEY PIKED UP NEAR THE END OF THE TWO MONTHS DEADLINE" Bully for them!

The question is why not pick up toward the end of the 3-months deadline? HOW GENEROUS!
Misinformed, INDEED! Again, back to INFERENCE. If you bother to read and understand the meaning of what is meant when I said "IF YOU ARE SERIOUS, YOU WILL GIVE PEOPLE TIME TO FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH THE ISSUES" AND THEN POINTED OUT "BUT THEY GOT TO KNOW WHAT THE ISSUES ARE IN THE FIRST PLACE".

If you are referring to the platforms of the different parties, then what you say supports what I wrote. However, if you are talking about your assumption that this writer does not know anything about the Parliamentary System, then, YOU ARE WAY OFF THE MARK. The issue is WHY THE RUSH? If the Opposition did the same I would ask the same question.

To the person who mentioned 2011, I suggest that you check your facts. The government of the day did not dissolve parliament before the end of term of office. The fact is that, under the constitution, before any new election takes place, parliament (House of Assembly) must be dissolved, whether it is end of term of office or whether it is a snap election

    The reality is:
    (1) Parliament was dissolved (Right of ruling party, okay).
    (2) New voters were given a limited amount of time to register (No absentee registration or voting allowed). Too bad if you are/had to be/ have to be away!
    (3) Though, after the dissolution of parliament, it is the right of the ruling party to call for the election 21-90 days post-dissolution, the question remains why is election not set at end of the maximum time allowed.
(4)PERCEPTION or CREDIBILITY dictate that the NDP should understand that because of the above, as well as all the recent goings on, it could be hurting its case. While not blaming any individual, the truth is that perception /perceptual credibility has a lot to do with how some people vote.
    (5) Unfortunately, there are some people who are going to vote around personality, personal likes and dislike. We need to be INFORMED VOTERS.
    (6) Never said I made up my mind who is going to get my vote. Noting personal (I don't know you), but reading comprehension is important, I SAID I KNOW WHO I AM NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR (GOES BACK TO THE ISSUE OF CREDIBILITY/PERCEPTION).
    (7) EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO DEFEND THE CHOSEN PARTY, but, you run the risk of others questioning your party WHEN YOU DON’T INTELLIGENTLY DO SO.
    (8) You got the guts to say that politicians are pulling the wool over my eyes- What politician? How? When? Talk for yourself, please, please!!

REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU POINT A FINGER AT A PERSON, AT LEAST THREE ARE POINTING BACK AT YOU.
