E.G. Maduro slams Hon Walwyn for talk on banning USVI entertainers

- said Minister should not have even entertained the thought
Talk show host Edmund G. Maduro (left inset) has criticised Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn for suggesting that entertainers from the US Virgin Islands be banned from performing at VI Emancipation Festivals due to the unresolved issue of VI entertainers being able to easily perform in the USVI. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Edmund G. Maduro has challenged Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn to dismiss the thought of placing a ban on United States Virgin Islands (USVI) entertainers, saying the back-lash of a ban can be more than he can ever fathom.

Mr Maduro, in an exclusive interview with this news site, was alluding to the recent ranting of Hon Walwyn who had told a local news site of possibly putting a clamp on the sister territory’s entertainers from performing at Festivals in the Virgin Islands in 2017 since there has been no resolve to the difficulties faced by VI entertainers wanting to perform in the USVI.

In April 2015, a number of musicians from the Virgin Islands had expressed frustration and embarrassment that the US Virgin Islands border patrol continued to restrict them from travelling to perform in that territory for gain and that the National Democratic Party (NDP) government seemed to be dragging its feet on the issue.

The matter had reached boiling point when musicians who were slated to perform at the St Thomas Carnival on Sunday April 26, 2015 were reportedly suddenly told by the St Thomas Carnival Committee that they could no longer accommodate them since they were not able to get the usual US Visa waiver for their bands to travel to the island to perform.

The local musicians had been deeply upset by this development since they would have invested money into preparation for their various performances in the USVI for carnival weekend.

Possible repercussions?

“I don’t think the Minister should even entertain such a thought. They have to continue to be in discussion, both us (VI) and the USVI on the matter. I don’t think that they are putting sufficient energy into the discussion and that’s why the problem exists up until this day. There must be some way to amicably address the matter. We have to learn to stick together.”

According to Maduro, “What if the United States Virgin Islands decides that they are going to stop us from using their dollar? Do you know what that means to us here? We have to learn to think carefully before we talk certain things.”

The talk show host said the issue is something to be discussed between the two territories.

Mr Maduro cited the strong bond of friendship that exists with the USVI and VI as one that is over a century old and which is kept alive by the annual ‘Friendship Day’ celebrations.

“Our friendship go way back long before I was born. We haven’t just started to spend US money. When the [USVI] was under [Denmark], we use to spend [Denmark] money too.

“We always had and have an excellent relationship with the USVI and people from St John use to come every Saturday on that boat to buy our provisions and so and we use to go to St Thomas to work and so and send home money to our families. That is a major part of our friendship.”

He went on to say that there are more VIslanders residing in the USVI than on the US mainland.

Can't take anything that Edmund says seriously since he accused Conch Charters of breaking his constitutional rights by not using his laundry service. The man is a full time victim.

I dont usually agree with Edmond but this time I will. Clearly he is trying to state that you just do not always have to fight fire with fire. Simple. Be the bigger person. Get down to the meat of the matter, and go from there. What Myron is doing is rather very childish. Lick little school children, you hit me and I hit you back instead of trying to work it out. Point taken Edmond

What amazes me most with Edmund Maduro is his ability to be the most critical on all issues but seldom has any tangibles solutions. Why wasn't he able to "amicably" nogotiate a contract with Conch Charters without allegedly threatening to shoot a member of their staff? Hogwash!!!!! NEXT!!

Don't mind Poncho. He posts under a millions different names saying the samething. Only he doesn't understand that the radio man's job is to allow discussion by the people and for their views to be heard. The
man's personal business has nothing to do with it. It just shows his small and petty mind. To be fair it stems from his frustration at the politician's incompetence but he lacks the balls to call them out because he depends on them so he barks up the wrong tree like a crazy mongrel dog.

Why should we continue to entertain USVI bands and BVI bands can't perform in USVI. I agree with Myron for the first time

Time for a level playing field.. We are neighbors and friends. Let it show in our actions. Our artist get hell to go to the USVI. Why should their artists just walk in here and perform...

Its been awhile that this thing between bvi and usvi going on, but all the bvi need to do is get their documents in order before you decide on makeing a trip. Not everyone in a band can travel. So because some have u think u can go also because u in the " band". Not at all. No papers no entry.

This behavior is very childish....tit for tat...I can't with this minister...as someone said in previous post he needs to grow the hell up. This is a FEDRAL issue. The locals in the USVI wants us to come but it's bigger than them..this is an issue that will take time and we have to go at it from now and keep at it....
I wonder if the Honourable minister knows how many BVIslanders are green card holders and living in the BVI. As Edmund say this can have a ripple effect. Myron you need to chill the hell out. Stop being a bulldog.

If the politician does not know the history of these islands he should not be a minister. Is he looking for a fight with the federal government? He has nothing to loose only indigenous British Virginislanders. Some people go too far and hurt others by their actions. A level head in politics is very important. Most of the people on the other side are our relatives, children and grandchildren of BV Islanders. How will he get that done. Be careful my friend.

Myron, ST.Thomas is not going to put up with the way they let you do in Tortola.
My advise to you is let sleeping dogs lie. Things have and should be done the right way. ST.Thomas and Tortola is allies. Please don't try to mess that up.

Even if the USVI Bands were banned, I don't think it will bother them none. Didn't Jammers go to Anguilla instead and turn the place up? And who did BVI get? That zika singer? Whose loss? Certainly not USVI. Who gained? Certainly not BVI. Take a lesson from the Wise, sometimes you get what you want, but it is not what you need.

Besides somebody please educate these people on International Politics and the role of the US Federal Government. All US homeland security and Immigration issues fall under the US Federal Government. All the artist have to do is apply like everyone else for the right papers to perform in US VI. What is so hard to understand about that?

Maduro and his fear mongering. The USVI wont stop us from using the $. That's such a load of bull. Don't believe a word that comes from that idiots mouth. I am all for restricting USVI citizens from operating businesses / working in the VI's. Allow local people to operate their day charters and take tourists around our islands. Not the americans.
