Edmund Maduro: “Complaints Commissioner is a waste of time!”
Maduro was at the time responding to a caller to his show who suggested that the Territory has a Complaints Commissioner as another alternative if the public was not obtaining proper redress from the Labour Department.
Maduro claimed that all the Complaints Commissioner does is just “write letters” and that there is the need for someone who could get up and go out in the community. The Complaints Commissioner is retired Deputy Governor Elton Georges.
Maduro claimed on the same show that he took two persons to the Labour Commissioner to address an issue and he was treated like a “pig” and had to walk out of the meeting. He offered no further details on the situation.
The Role of the Complaints Commissioner
It was in 2009 when the Virgin Islands (VI) received its first Complaints Commissioner, where the public was able to commence lodging complaints against Government departments and other statutory bodies.
The position was written in Sections 110 and 111 of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007. The key roles of the Commissioner includes: to consider complaints relating to matter of mal administration by a department of Government and or public authorities by conducting independent and impartial investigations, to report on the complaints considered, including a summary of how they have been resolved, the commissioner's findings and the recommendations made, to appoint mediators where necessary to help resolve disputes and to promote public awareness of the role of the complaints commissioner.
The Commissioner’s role is also to encourage all public officers and authorities to respond constructively to complaints made directly to them.
Meanwhile, Maduro, who is the former host of the TV talk show, ‘Speak Your Mind’ on JTV channel 55, told the media earlier this month that he was kicked off the show by the management of the TV station.
"They virtually kicked me off...and that young man Titley was behind it… the owner just walked in about 10 or 20 minutes before the show ends and cut me off just because I would not allow people to be rude to me," he had told the Morning Ride radio show.
Maduro was also an unsuccessful independent At-Large candidate in the 2011 VI general elections.
