ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- In a spirited discussion on the EGM show aired on ZROD 103.7 FM on Thursday March 2, 2017 where former Permanent Secretary Julian Willock was the guest, host of the show Mr Edmund G. Maduro, in his usual fiery tone, called for the United Kingdom to impose direct rule on the Virgin Islands.

At the time, Mr Willock raised concerns over the Government not addressing the audited financial reports and spoke to the violations of the Public Financial Management Act.

At this time, Mr Maduro told the public on the show that Governor John S. Duncan OBE should have already dissolved the House of Assembly (HoA) over this matter.

Bring on Direct rule-Maduro

Mr Maduro, a former Chief Immigration Officer and host of the EGM show, asked “Did the UK not take over the Turks and Caicos Islands when the government failed?”

He said it is time for the UK to “impose direct rule on the BVI as the government is not accountable and continues to violate the laws of the Territory.”

However, his guest Mr Willock disagreed and said he is “opposed to direct rule.” Noting that while there is a lot to be desired by this Administration, Mr Willock made clear “I am strongly opposed to UK direct rule.”

Mr Willock also explained the Budget and its process and said he was disappointed that legislators did not explain to the public “how the Budget works.”

The host asked Mr Willock, again, if he was running for office, to which Mr Willock noted that “I am not ready to make an announcement.”

The big question

However, Mr Willock stated that one can also make a contribution to building the country in many other ways besides political office and, while noble, “is just one of many ways.” He listed others in the community making meaningful contributions, like teachers, firefighters, doctors, the men and women that keep the lights and water on, along with many non-government organisations such as the Family Support Network, which he said is “doing a lot of meaningful work.”

Finally, Mr Willock warned that we as a country need to be vigilant with politicians in the HoA who are starting to preach and becoming biblical. He said there is a Satan in the HoA; however, his message was "Satan, you can’t prevail.”

keep calling for direct rule and be foolish enough to think that direct rule will benefit our people....the kind of debt this territory have London smart enough to leave us alone( the U.K. not looking any liability that's why the UK abandoned the EU: rather than seeking to put us back in Master's hands make those we have elected conduct themselves better by coming with better legislation to regulate government's spending and swiftly prosecute any member of government that conducts the business outside of rules: we have placed ourselves in this position: try leave Buckingham out of our mess

If the BVI people don't demand that all of their representatives retire, and Edmund keep off the radio then we are all doomed

@ Stella: if you know the history of this territory then you will also know maduro had an opportunity to set certain standards in this country but did nothing: most of them on radio taking and taking were in positions to put the checks and balances in place for the people of our country but did nothing.

I've just kind of reached my fill with all of this. At this point, I check the news just to see if the country is going to fall apart more rapidly, so I know to brace for impact. I don't expect it to change. I don't expect it to get better. It just feels like watching a bad soap opera that doesn't seem to get any better. I'm reading some depressing French nihilist philosophy right now that's actually more uplifting.

The BVI has been given the chance to rule themselves about 85% through several admin. and both parties, and have failed. Before the islands sink or are run by the Chinese (school children are the only ones that will be able to speak to them!!), let the U.K. step back in, NOW!!!

      I'll keep it simple.

The Edmund Maduro is dangerously deluded.

What can (or will) anyone do about it?

H.E. , shut your stupid mouth up, as school children used to say. You want the days of Massah to return? You are a man without the knowledge of your past. You are not qualified to speak about our future. Shut to hell up.

There are so many serious problems in the BVI. crime, unemployment, broke people and government, etc.

Rome burned while Nero fiddled. The BVI might burn while Walwyn rants in the House about JW.

We don't want any direct rule. We prefer things the way they are but we need new leaders. Visionaries, selfless, God fearing leaders.
