SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – The Ebenezer Thomas Primary School today November 12, 2015 held its annual cultural celebration under the theme ‘Remembering the Legends of VI Music, Our Treasure’ which paid tribute to the territory’s rich fungi music heritage.

And to top it off the school launched its very own fungi band as a way of paying tribute to those who paved the way in the traditional music form.

All of the students were dressed in the colours of the territory and in the traditional garb that is unique to the Virgin Islands.

The students were given a brief talk on the rich heritage of which they were a part. They also learned how to tune their various instruments as they prepared to perform and the importance of silence in this process as one needs to properly hear how the instruments sound.

Some of the instruments demonstrated were the steel pan, percussion drums and the ukulele.

In addition to the traditional music and mode of dress, today’s activity also featured traditional foods.

Speaking to this news site, Principal of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School Sybil S. Hodge said the focus of the event was music because of the theme.

“We have assembly now going on so we are bringing out all of the music that we have and we are also making the debut of our fungi band.”

Principal Hodge said past and present legends of fungi music such as the Lashing Dogs and the Razor Blades in addition to moko jumbies and steel pans were also on display.

“At 12:00 PM we will have local foods on sale so you could get your salt fish, get your fungi, get your Johnny cakes... whatever you want in terms of local foods.”

The event is to bring down its curtains around 3:00 PM today.
