East End/Long Look Parade marred by late start, poor organization

EAST END/LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI – It seemed as if Murphy's Law was being played out yesterday, August 8, 2012 at the East End Long Look (EE/LL) Parade, as everything that could go wrong quite possibly did do so at the start of the parade.

The EE/LL Parade appeared loaded with lethargy; a stop-start effect also left many troupe members looking disenchanted and out of place. The promised excitement and fun seemingly was not materializing and a totally disorganized and late start added much frustration.

Rain interruptions didn’t help matters either; it was difficult to find a glimmer emanating from anywhere else save for the brightly coloured and well-designed costumes themselves and the fleeting smiles that interspersed the tired looks of the troupe members on occasion.

It may have simply been a domino effect coming from the tiredness left by the early morning’s Rise and Shine Tramp but it seemed more apparent that organisers may just have not put enough systems in place to execute a smooth and efficient parade yesterday.

Moments of excitement early on in the parade seemed few and far between as troupes were without music for some time with members of one troupe expressing their disappointment at having their truck forcibly attached to another troupe due to a mechanical defect with another truck.

In giving a frank assessment of the proceedings of the day, they expressed that they felt that the parade was “not organized… not organized” they added that at one point another troupe had simply made off “with our sound system that we had paid for”.

One band broke down causing a nearly hour long delay along the route but the dancers continued to entertain in spurts despite this as early along the route persons chose to watch from the comfort of their homes for the most part.

Parade felt more like a dance competition

Instead of an actual parade, troupes were seen dancing at a makeshift spot along the route making way for another troupe to take their place as they moved backward in completing a session of dancing. There was simply no sort of procession to the affairs for lengthy periods of time.

All this seemed to change somehow, as towards the very end of the procession dancers suddenly summoned the vigour that was missing all along and performed vivaciously for the many that thronged the side lines along the end of the route.

Troupes in yesterday’s EE/LL parade started off from the Chapel Hill area and tapered off at the Moviene Fahie Festiville village. Participants included recently crowned pageant queens, as was the case in the August Monday Parade held in Road Town; Moko Jumbies, the St Thomas Majorettes; the Hugga Bunch group, also from St Thomas; Treasures of the BVI; Masqueraders; Sunshine Dancers and Golden Pom Pom Girls. Some of the troupes also took part in the Road Town Parade as well.

This is not a political group, so don't try to make it one. Politics don't have to be in everything. I do think that we need to understand why all the focus of that committee one place, and there appears to be none in two other areas.

It was a late start... and no different from the others, but that ain't no excuse. Troupes need to understand if you didn't pay for it, don't argue to go behind it. That said, if a troupe wants to be behind a particular band then the troupe needs to help bear the cost. it's time to get back to DJ and let troupes bring their CDs. That jouvert need to stop in both Town and East End on the day of the parade cause it helps contribute to the late start in both areas. Find another day and start parade early. Orgnizers could have the perfect plan but when it involve people, the people have to pull their weight. The jouvert was to stop at 7 a.m. ask them when it stop. troupes from town who registered for east end didn't even show, and as usually it help mess up the whole thing. and then they took jammers HD (who the cap fit) and carry them on a boat ride when they full well know they were schedule for east end to play for one of the same troupes that was displeased and disenchancted. one thing though the committee from the president in East end need to change. I believe when that part change the rest of the areas like the Queen show and parade going get the real attention. The support missing at the top. Hope marvin reading this... and keep politics out.

The town parade started fine and simply needed to be better marshalled once it started. So don't bring town into this!

At 1:30 p.m. the Road Town parade was by the hospital which was very good in comparison to recent years. They should be commened for the effort.

@ Lb, the town parade started fine, please. It was my first time attending any function for carnival this year and believe me I don't want to go there again. Everything damn near started late. It is a shame when people say that if the even suppose to start at 9 am for example, then the next thing to say well in tola time its about one hour to two hours after that time... so please don't tell me you were there.. because correct me if I am wrong DID THE TOWN PARADE START ON TIME... ahhh let me see NOOOOO. And since I was located across from digicel.. it may have started early but it reached up in that area I would say around 3 or after 3..., I was told it started around 1 or 1:30 and you mean to tell me.. it took them so long to reach right there.. please.. tola always disorganized to me... , but I LOVE THIS COUNTRY OF MINE, everyday you got to put on a smile.. or esle you would go crazy

the president of East End committee needs to go..in fact the entire committee needs to go, for they are the ones that let the president Presila turn it into her personal festival...She deliberately excluding Locals bands and pulling strings to stop activities such as the (BOAT RIDE) to ensure people come to East activities. GOD DON"T LIKE UGLY

Tis not the entire committee because if the voices of the majority take over the minority dont have a prayer. find who the majority is and you going find the right solution. The majority is the problem.

I was disappointed wid this year’s whole east end parade and juva...the juva stared late and they had to rush off the street, then the parade was late....maybe after all we should get rid of this event

I get frustrated with so many different parades - Road Town, East End, Carrot Bay, and then a whole different one for VG. Brazil doesn't have four different parades - why do we do it in BVI. Let's just do one parade and make it the best that we can be.
