EAST END/LONG LOOK, Tortola, VI – The East End 2014 XMas Basketball League has been cancelled and according to sources the cancellation is due in part to the non-availability of the facility on which the games were to be played.

The basketball league should have started yesterday December 14, 2014 and about 12 teams should have been participating, according to information reaching our news room.

Speaking with this news site on December 12, 2014, President of the East End Basketball League Committee Messena S. Vanterpool would not disclose much, save to say that the cancellation was due to circumstances beyond the control of the Committee.

Vanterpool said, "It (the League) was cancelled due to circumstances beyond the control of the Committee. I'm not sure of the details."

However a source close to the committee said the recreational facilities in Greenland, East End are not in a condition to allow basketball games to be played there.

"They did that facility immediately after the last election and it did not even last for two years," said the source close to one of the teams that should have been competing.

The source made an appeal for someone in the BVI Recreation Trust to do what is necessary to look after the facilities as they are in a dire state. The source cannot understand that a facility built just under three years ago could deteriorate to such a sorry state.

"We are hearing that the Committee can't find any alternative venue in the 7th or the 8th District to hold the tournament," stated our source.

Efforts to reach 7th District Representative Dr the Hon Kedrick D. Pickering and 8th District Representative Hon Marlon A. Penn for comment on the state of the facilities proved futile.

In June 2012 Government signed a contract with Mr. Cliff Williams in the amount of $34,605.96 to supply and install an all-weather outdoor basketball court at the Greenland facilities.

Also according to other residents in the districts associated with the League, funding of the League could have been an issue that contributed to the cancellation.

The league is usually paid for by Representatives of the 7th and 8th Districts.

The Hon Julian Fraser (R3) and Chairman of Virgin Islands Party (VIP) just completed a successful league that ended last month. The League was sponsored by corporate BVI and co-hosted by Hon Fraser and Bishop John I. Cline from the Save the Seed Energy Centre.

@Who To Blame, Blaming Fraser is ok, but heblaming him for the wrong reason. The reason it is Fraser's fault is because Fraser has raised the standard so high that no body want to be playing outdoors on any asphalt court. In Fraser league it is indoors and aircondition. Talk that.

I guess this is NDP's fault and not the nasty inconsiderate people in the District using the facilities and destroying it. They should let it rot and do not invest another dime in it. They are sick just like those in Belle Vue with their facility, no shame and no pride.

@ Wellsah WTF you is to be talking bout nasty inconsiderate people every facility ground round here inst kept in good condition they build that court just for votes n never look back at it. They don't maintain it no one come n clean it no one dont come n check on the field the rubber on the court is a waste of time if the dew falls to hard the court is like ice you just slipping. yeah if u got kids around all they do is play n destroy but we the grown ones that be around try or best to keep it in best shape. the padding around the rim post after the first Christmas league they was don't tearing. the fence i sure the island man them who plays football is what break that down... we keep bawling on the HON. That they need to put down tah on the court the place the rubber on top of it. water settles under it when it rains to don't have proper drain. don't talk bout the softball field self cannot practice up there... so yeah next time you blogging don't jump on the people of the district jump on the representative. we our self has to buy nets n put up we brought a bench up there to sit on they place these old useless bleachers what was already broken down.

East End people do not know the value of taking care of things that they do not have to pay for. 1. they will use the court and then leave it nasty with all kinds of garbage on the stands, grounds etc. 2. The person or persons supposed to be taking care of the facility leaves a lot to the mind Hmmm. 3. I would like to see the bills for the electricity. That facility should be locked at all times and keys logged at the police station where you have to log them out and log them in. If that was done we might have seen better care taken of that facility. When you spend that kind of money to build these facilities you need to charge a fee to use it and make sure the organization or people who use them clean up when they are finished, and have someone inspect it after usage for any damages. That is the only way these places will be taken care of by the people who use them. Especially East End field.

for one thing- the "fraser" league being indoors has nothing to do any great initiatyive by Fraser- just so happens the building was available for hire- last year the east end christmas league moved up to belle vue and the court at greenlands is perfectly good enough for the league to have played. everyone just expects, expects, expects, but looks after nothing. it is not ndp nor is it vip, it is society and our own habits of not caring for anything. if they really ewanted a christmas league in east end, then there would be one- they used to use the other court as well, so is just propganda nonsense that they cant have one. the whole point of these leagues is to bring communities together, not to win rings and suchlike.

East End needs its own multipurpose Sport Complex dubbed the EE/LL Sports Arena, with a removable park-kay court, seating capacity of $5, 000ppl with a gym, locker rooms and food court area. Who politician will give us this. The doc can get his corporate friends to build it us. I'm sure.

This sounds like Shak, one of Fraser's cronies who is up and down talking things he feels he knows. He knows nothing of politics other that what he is fed. Fraser did not even study the youths before, but now for political points here he goes as though he runs all youths. Things always change when a person gets power.
