LONDON, England, UK- The Virgin Islands’ London Office Director, who is equivalent to the British Overseas Territory of the Virgin Islands Ambassador to the United Kingdom and the European Union, E. Benito Wheatley, has been selected by the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Science and Policy (CSaP) as a 2018 Policy Fellow, according to a press statement late last week.

As the Virgin Islands' United Kingdom and European Union representative, Mr Wheatley will engage University of Cambridge scholars and the CSaP’s network of senior UK government and EU public servants and business leaders in a series of meetings on the future of the UK’s relationship with the Overseas Territories (OT).

Among other things, the young Ambassador will discuss UK-OT relations in regard to security, climate change, natural disasters/recovery, international business and Brexit.

Deep VI Roots

Mr Wheatley, an indigenous Virgin Islander whose grandfather Willard Wheatley was the second Chief Minister of the Virgin Islands (VI), said in the media statement, “It is an honour to be selected by Cambridge as a CSaP Policy Fellow, which is complementary to my role as the BVI’s UK and EU Representative. The devastation caused by the two Category 5 hurricanes in 2017 that hit Anguilla, BVI, Turks and Caicos and other islands in the Caribbean, brought into clear focus the importance of Britain’s relationship with the Overseas Territories.”

Historical first

Mr Wheatley, the brother of Dr Natalio D. Wheatley, is the first official from the Caribbean and a British Overseas Territory to be selected as a CSaP Policy Fellow. He is also the co-chair of the OCT-European Union Partnership Working Party on Financial Services.

The VI’s Representative, who is the son of radio talk show host Doug Wheatley, holds a Master of Science degree in International Strategy and Diplomacy from the London School of Economics and Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Morehouse College (USA). He is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Institute of Directors (IOD) and an alumnus of CSC Leaders, according to the statement.

This young man is doing a great job serving his country where he is. I would not advise him to become tainted in Politics. Sometimes the same voices that praise you today could curse you tomorrow.

That is the problem with us we haven't learnt anything from irma. Bear in mind the storm did not discriminate. True blood or as you said half breed. It did not spare anyone. If you have not noticed everyone was brought down to the same level. In the next few months we will face another hurricane season. Lets stop this nonsense. The young man who is about to contest a seat in St Thomas, I haven't heard talks that he is not a true blooded US citizen because his parents or part is from Huntums Ghut Tortola. In fact we bragg about hiim. We applaud when our people are a success in other people's country but protest when they do in ours. Guess that is why the BVIs are different. By the way the only" true blood" Virgin Islander are the Amaindians. Our fore fathers were brought here from Africa. We are not indigenous to this Islands as we want to believe. We were brought here .

What we need is some full blood Native Carin Indians running the place, and all the foreign self proclaimed BVIslanders out.

we need young innovative minds like his and others to continue a great legacy. not like some who wants to be leaders in power for life and forget others want to make a contribution too including their own bloodline. it is a pity when most continue a legacy of corruption nepotism greed etc and call it good governance yes good in their own sight.

Benito is a class act. I am very proud of him. He represents himself and the BVI well in London. Not surprise at this development at all. I see bright things in his future; however, I think he is wise enough to stay away from politics in today's climate at the moment.

Nevertheless, if there was one person of the younger generation who has what it takes to run this country one day, in case he changes his mind, I would vote for him in a heartbeat and support him wholeheartedly. I have that much confidence in him and his abilities.

Quite frankly, I selfishly would prefer he worked in my company instead. Ha Ha. It does not get any better than him. He is one of the best coming of the BVI. Much respect to him.
