Duffs Bottom man accused of verbally abusing police officer
Mills pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being represented by attorney Ruthilia Maximea.
According to the allegations read by Crown Counsel Herbert Potter, police were conducting investigations on August 25, 2012 between 8-9:30 P.M. following an aggravated robbery in Road Town. They reportedly searched the Crabbe Lot area for the suspect.
One team of officers entered the entrance behind Riteway and a team consisting of Detective Constable Powers and Inspector Howell entered from Main Street. As they entered the area, people reportedly ran and the defendant allegedly ran into powers while holding something against his body.
The court heard that officers shouted, ‘Police, don’t move!’ but he allegedly pushed the officer away and tried to run. Powers then reportedly held on to the defendant and a struggle started. Powers told the defendant he was under arrest for assault while repeating ‘Police, don’t move!’ and asked the defendant what he had in his possession.
Suspecting that he had illegal drugs, the officers asked him to relax but he allegedly fought them still. The defendant was allegedly persistent to the point of holding on to Powers’ firearm but he was prevented by both officers.
A crowd gathered while the struggle was going on and the defendant reportedly managed to escape, leaving his shirt in the Inspector’s hand. It was further alleged that Mills advanced with others toward the officers and pointed his fingers towards Powers’ nose and said, ‘You see you, I will [expletive] you up’. Officers then reportedly drew their weapons and carefully withdrew.
On August 27, 2012 the team of officers went in search of the defendant but he was not found. Persons reportedly refused to cooperate and police could not determine the identification of the others. The defendant reportedly showed up at the Road Town Police Station on the same day.
Asked if he could remember what happened, the defendant allegedly walked off and sucked his teeth. He was arrested and cautioned and an audio/visual interview was done and he allegedly admitted to being in Crabbe Lot area and running when police came because he had a ‘joint’ at the time.
He also allegedly mentioned the struggle and that police tried to arrest him and said that was why he began to fight. Mills allegedly refused to sign for the interview.
At court, Mills was placed on $25,000 signed bail with one surety and asked to return to court on December 9, 2013 for trial.
