VALLEY, Virgin Gorda,VI - Teachers of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre (BFEC) Primary Division were taken by total surprise when during the first staff meeting of the new school year Principal Hilroy A. George presented them with back to school gift bags.

The gift bags were sponsored Drift Wood Resorts. On hand to distribute the bags was CEO of Drift Wood Resort Mr. Trefor Grant.

In his remarks, Principal George thanked Mr. Grant for his gracious donation and for always being a great supporter of Bregado Flax.

Mr. Grant brought greetings on behalf of himself and his partner Douglas Riegels and wished the teachers a successful school year.

Mr. Grant also thanked the Principal for allowing Drift Wood the opportunity to be a part of Bregado Flax and applauded the teachers for the great work that they do. Also on hand to help with the distribution of the gift bags was Sister Islands Programme Coordinator, Mr. Vincent O. Wheatley.

Wheatley said, “Sometimes we take for granted that teachers have all of the tools that the need to work with and sometimes this is not always the case. When you go the extra mile to get things for teachers that they might need, things that you might take for granted that the Department will supply, when you do this for teachers they appreciate it, because these are the very things that they might not have or have in abundance."

"So we partnered with the private sector in Drift Wood in making it happen where we can present teachers with things like paper and pens, pencils, erasers, things that they will need to work with throughout the year," he said.

“These are things that are practical and things that are needed on a daily basis and it would also save them money,” he said. “It makes their job a little easier as it is one less thing to worry about,” he said. “It is about going the extra mile to make sure that not only the students are taken care of but the teachers as well,” he said.

Principal George said he thought it would have been very fitting for the teachers to be presented with some light back to school tokens to feel appreciated. “Because they are the ones on the ground, they are the ones you have to get motivated to get the quality teaching for the students. So I thought about it and contacted Mr Wheatley and he made all the arrangements,” he said.

George said that the teachers were very pleasantly surprised and all had big smiles on their faces. “It wasn’t anything big but just the thought that they were considered I think they felt appreciated,” he said.

The Rotary Club of Road Town ensured that the Secondary Division teachers also got similar packages.

Speaking on behalf of the Secondary Division of the school Heida F. Joyles-Selwood, one of the Administrators of the school said, “on behalf of the acting Principal I just want to express our extreme thank you for that little package. Often times we take things for granted and many times we have to supply basic needs for ourselves. I have to express to you how thankful we are and how grateful we are.”

She said that often times they have to supply the basic things they need as teachers and it was at a recent Principals' and Senior teachers' workshop where she was overwhelmed by the talks of other schools being adopted and getting external support. This prompted her to contact Mr Wheathey and ask him to get some sort of support for the BFEC teachers.

He did accept the challenge and this resulted in the President of the Rotary Club of Road Town Mr Shan Mohamad responding to the call.
