ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Magistrate Ayanna O. Baptiste-DaBreo today, July, 17, 2020, sentenced Ingrid Alcantara De Polanco, 42, of the Dominican Republic to four months at Her Majesty’s Prison for illegally entering the Virgin Islands.

She was also fined $1,000 and that fine must be paid in seven days or spend two more months at the prison.

De Polanco was caught trying to exit the Virgin Islands via the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island on July 8, 2020, after entering illegally.

She was charged with ‘Landing in the Territory without leave from an Immigration Officer’ on July 8, 2020, and later pleaded guilty before the court on July 14, 2020.

According to the court, the defendant entered into the Territory on a date unknown between June 27 and July 8, 2020.

She was coming from St Thomas, USVI, and arrived on Tortola, where she was taken to a house for a few days before she attempted to leave at the airport.

When she passed through security and then customs, officials there realised she did not have an entry stamp and asked her to step aside.

After having a conversation with her, she was brought to the Road Town Police Station where she was interviewed.

$1K Trip

During the interview with police, De Polanco reportedly told them she came to the Territory on a vessel.

She said she had to pay $1,000 to be brought in.

The officers then laid the charge on her.

Want to go home

Addressing the court on her behalf during her arraignment hearing, lawyer Nelson Samuel said his instruction was that his client, a widow, was diagnosed with a lump in her breasts and was desirous of going home to her children in the Dominican Republic.

He then asked the court to impose a fine as opposed to a custodial sentence and allow her the opportunity to continue to work and look after her children.

However, Magistrate Ayana O. Baptiste-DaBreo said she was baffled as to the reason why this defendant decided to pay for an illegal ride to the Territory, yet the borders are still closed.

Medical report is old!

She then questioned why the defendant didn’t remain in the USVI and fly out directly to her home country because the borders there are open.

She then asked for the medical document to be produced to the court on the defendant’s behalf.

When the medical document was presented to the court during the zoom sentencing, it was revealed that the tests in question were done in October 2019 and not recently.

Good work done my the immigration department. I believe you can help out the royal virgin islands police force bunch of retards..A simple house with for sides they went to execute a warrant and make the men escape what some clowns. Let me make a mistake in road town you would see how i would be treated by these same cops. These officers need to be suspended especially based on the location of the property that they allowed the wanted man to escape. A simple hose with four sides . I know the house and i know the area .something really not adding up when i look at the location that this man and others get away from. These immigration officers at the airport need to lend a hand to the police department. I am really worried about these officers in the rvipf.are they really serious about their job or just in it for the salary?? I know for a fact they are very easy to bribed. But amongst the beggy beggy ones it still have a handful of good ones. So i only hope the cop is getting an investigation on the way..

She was on her way out! You stop her, put her in jail to feed her for months and then send her home on your dime?

@another way: I agree with you 100% that makes no sense whatsoever to me. Just charge her a fine and let the woman go home. Illegal or not she was already leaving, so charge her a fine for breaking the law and send her on her merry way. Just another waste of tax payers money.

So if these 'working women' get themselves to the USVI illegally they cannot leave via STT airport without clearing US customs before entering the departure lounge. This means it is much more likely for them to get caught. That is why being smuggled to the BVI and departing from here where there are no such checks to leave is a much better alternative for them. Before they could just get on the ferry (no customs to come back to the BVI), but now they can't do this. This being said - there are probably hundreds more women like her who have come in illegally from STT since the borders were closed.

Send her back home. I am sure she does not have the $$ to pay the fine. To maintain her at the prison is additional $$on the public purse. A ticket is more economical.
