ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A national of the Dominican Republic residing in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI), was caught trying to exit the Virgin Islands via the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island on July 8, 2020, after entering illegally.

Ingrid Alcantara De Polanco, 42, was charged with ‘Landing in the Territory without leave from an Immigration Officer’ on July 8, 2020.

She entered a guilty plea when the charge was put to her during her arraignment on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.

According to the court, the defendant entered into the Territory on a date unknown between June 27 and July 8, 2020.

She was coming from St Thomas, USVI, and arrived on Tortola, where she was taken to a house for a few days before she attempted to leave at the airport.

When she passed through security and then customs, officials there realised she did not have an entry stamp and asked her to step aside.

After having a conversation with her, she was brought to the Road Town Police Station where she was interviewed.

$1K Trip

During the interview with police, De Polanco reportedly told them she came to the Territory on a vessel.

She said she had to pay $1,000 to be brought in.

The officers then laid the charge on her.

Want to go home

Addressing the court on her behalf, lawyer Nelson Samuel said his instruction was that his client, a widow, was diagnosed with a lump in her breasts and was desirous of going home to her children in the Dominican Republic.

He then asked the court to impose a fine as opposed to a custodial sentence and allow her the opportunity to continue to work and look after her children.

However, Magistrate Ayana O. Baptiste-DaBreo said she was baffled as to the reason why this defendant decided to pay for an illegal ride to the Territory, yet the borders are still closed.

Medical report requested

She then questioned why the defendant didn’t remain in the USVI and fly out directly to her home country because the borders there are open.

She then asked for the medical document to be produced to the court on the defendant’s behalf.

The matter was adjourned to tomorrow July 15, 2020, for sentencing.

One caught, but how many more possibly still here that came in that way. We are trying to stay safe, but it takes ONE selfish person to wreak havoc on this little island. I hope they test her.

I empathize with this lady’s condition but she was still wrong to enter illegally.. News like this gets me so angry.. our borders are really not safe even from this virus.. Look at how this lady was able to be dropped off and the ones found prior at prickly pear.. Hmmn I tell u..our borders have us like a ticking time bomb with this virus .. the magistrate is right why couldn’t she have gone to the DR from st Thomas - their borders are open.. she didn’t need to come here and try to leave after.. she must have family here.. this is all so scary.. I believe part of the problem is that we are made up of all these islands and cays and it’s hard to track..Unsure what can be done - this is very serious for if a wave of this virus sweeps through how can our hosp handle it with only like 5-6 ICU beds/ventilators.i pray not Lord. our borders are just not secure at all..

      @Ghost.
Could it be that she may have entered the USVI illegally also. If she tried to leave thru their airport she would face the same procedures as ours. No proof of entry. She will then be charged with illegal entry and deported with no option of ever returning there. By using the BVI route, after receive medical treatment she can travel back to the BVI and re enter the USVI thru the same way she left. She well know what she doing, just trying to be the system.

Stupid He***er could infect us all. Who was she here with? They all need to be quarantined and made to pay BIG FINES. She had $1000 to get here for what? She was here doing dirty d**ds because like they said, she could have left from the USVI. Something is up and it is endangering us. Just as we thought it was safe to go into the water.....

@ (0).. I see you are informed. The saying "Just as we thought it was safe to go into the water" does not literally mean I want to go swimming. It means just as we thought we were safe, along comes something to throw us back into danger. Get with the program fool! I am pissed off that people are entering here undetected and could infect all of us who have been safe so far.

And why she came here? For medical care or visiting friends? She is wrong. And the person who charged $1000.00 to bring her to a closed border country is also wrong. Whoever gave a place to stay is also wrong. And all acted irresponsibly selfish. There should be investigations, stiff fines and jail time if applicable. Make an example of them so people out there don't think BVI people are stupid.

Bottom line is that we need to get serious about law enforcement here.

When we begin to take law and order seriously, then and only then would offenders realise that we are not making joke anymore and all this crime and disobedience would begin to recede. We have the laws on our books. Throw the books at them!

Yet nobody is talking about the punks living among us who are helping to bring these people in. Those who are taking a $1k to risk everyone's lives.

Someone knows who they are. It's time to protect us all by informing on them.

Santo Domingo confirmed Corona cases arriving at 50,000.
Not to mention the avalanche of every STD .AIDS
    and HIV the norm.
Consider too the prevalence of the oldest profession catered to by the females and sex tourism there as an industry which requires some global quickie travelling by their women.
