PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – President of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Dr Karl Dawson has returned to his post at the territory’s lone tertiary institution following some reported turbulence between him and the Board of Directors of the college who allegedly voted to remove him as President.

However, contacted yesterday August 3, 2015 by this news site, Dr Dawson said that he had no comment to make on the issue.

It had been reported that even though the HLSCC Board wanted to go in the direction of removing Dr Dawson as HLSCC President, this was not supported by Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn.

Dawson, who was pivotal in ensuring that the college gains accreditation status, had found himself facing the wrath of the Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn after he reportedly confirmed the news of the accreditation status to the media ahead of the minister.

The HLSCC President, who contested the June 8, 2015 general elections where he received the fifth highest votes as a Territorial At Large candidate for the Virgin Islands Party, was on leave from HLSCC to contest the election. He had told this news site that he was reporting back for duty in July 2015 “unless otherwise instructed.”

Dr Dawson made his first public address since returning to the college from leave on July 30, 2015 at the Passing Out Parade for the inaugural Police Recruit Training.

According to media reports on June 25, 2015, Hon Walwyn asserted that at that time he was still to be officially notified of the college being granted accreditation status and that he was disappointed that Dr Dawson had confirmed the accreditation ahead of him, which he reportedly said was disrespectful since there is a protocol regarding such announcements.

Dr Dawson, when contacted on the matter by this news site at that time, had said he wished not to offer a comment.

A process which began in 2012

It was in the year 2012 that Dr Dawson had set out on a mission to have the institution become accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The process saw the Commission visiting and scrutinising the college and making an independent review based on their findings. The college was also required to do a self-study report.

The news of the college being accredited came two weeks after then Acting President of the HLSCC Dr Bryan Penn had announced that the college was closer to achieving that goal.

In his address to the graduating class of 2014-2015 on Thursday June 11, 2015 Dr Penn said the college was at that time awaiting the Middle States Commission on Higher Education’s decision regarding its accreditation bid.

“The college has submitted a comprehensive self-study report that highlights its compliance with the fourteen best practice-oriented standards. A team of peer-reviewers visited the college and interviewed the Board of Governors, and members of the Administration, faculty, staff and student populations…the contents of our self-study report, and the supporting evidence we provided,” Dr Penn had reported.

He also noted that it was after comprehensively scrutinising the college that the visiting team concluded that the college appears to be in compliance with all 14 standards. They also provided recommendations and suggestions for improvement.

“Next, the Middle States Commission will independently review all evidence and findings, then decide on the college’s accreditation status, later this month,” Dr Penn had said.

If Myron wanted him gone, he would be gone. With the board wanting him gone, I'm sure the Minister had to be the one to keep things calm, at least for now. It shows that Walwyn isn't as evil as you all would have him to be!

Keeping him there is a political move you idiot. To remove him now will look vindictive and reflect poorly on the NDP. My guess is that Walwyn was made to to keep him there by higher ups.

This is the dumbest comment ever!!Being born in a particular place and with generations before being born there do not qualify a person for any position. Stop it please. Sensible reasoning appears to be out the door for some of us.

I respect you so much for this Myron - if you sided with them then my thoughts about you would have been different. After all the man did something great for the college.

Dr. Dawson did not get the College accredited on his own. It is an insult to all of us who work there to assert that he was the most integral piece of the puzzle. It is clear that most people know nothing about the struggle to get things done in spite of Dawson. What happened to giving the staff the credit it is due? He did not write the responses to the 14 Standards. It took team work. This is another example of someone taking the credit for a Team effort. Ask the people who work there how much EVERYONE contributed not just Dawson. SMH.

half of you did not do what was expected. matter of fact you all did not want the place to get accredited so the man could look bad. God in control.

@HLSCC Lecturer......are you indeed a Lecturer? That response was so petty ....no one give Dr Dawson all the credit for the Accreditation, what they said, is that he was instrumental in the college gaining the Accreditation. ....why don't identify yourself so we can all personally commend you.....Absolutely there is no doubt you were one that voted against him as college President... .shame on you. ....

People running for political office in this country should have at least one BVI parent and grandparents born in the BVI.We are constantly selling out our birthright . Take the grandfather clause out of the constitution. Indigenous Virginislanders are treated like third class citizens. Everything is geared towards the outsider.

None of us are indigenous! Stop with your divisiveness. Everyone has to be born somewhere. I can trace back six generations of my lineage who were born in the Virgin Islands. But guess what, I still feel a deep, deep void because I still do not have a complete record of my origin . My ancestors were brought here against their will, traded, sold and inherited. Is it really important whether a person who was born here has parents from elsewhere? We are all one people. You sound like some Americans who cannot show respect to our black US President; especially because his father is from Kenya, Africa. We all belong to one race, the human race, and are all equal in God's sight

Why they harassing Dawson. He is only president on paper. When he makes decisions that are not in the employees favor they go to their godparents on the board and get what they want. His cousin started a fire before she left and is only now it burning. May God have mercy on them all. Hold your head high Dawson.

Dawson and Walwyn are two excellent sons of the soil, why are people busy bodying themselves trying to destroy the territory. I think the squabbling is very petty, mature and grow the BVI for the good of all, stop building gallows for others.
