PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI – It is Official! President of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Dr. Karl Dawson has confirmed with this news site that two of his key members of staff have tendered their resignations which will see a void in the tertiary education system at the college but is confident those positions will be filled following a period of advertising.

“Yes we have received resignations from two senior members of staff: the Director of Workforce training and the Associate Vice President effective sometime in November for the Dean and at the end of the year for the Associate Vice President,” said Dr Dawson.

This was first related to this news site by persons close to this news site and those who share many concerns about the future and present status of the HLSCC. “I am and I know many of my colleagues are concerned about the future of this college,” said one tutor who prefers not to be identified.

It was related that the resignations of the two persons Dr Derry Hodge, Dean, Workforce Training Division, HLSCC and Associate Vice President Dr Christine D. Hodge are leaving in the advanced stage of the college’s accreditation process.

“Could you fathom those two key positions being vacated at such a critical time in the life of the college not that I am faulting them for going, they have their reasons and it’s up to management if they want to hold their key administrators to ensure they are comfortable in the positions that they hold and that’s not the case especially [for] one of them,” the source said.

The source declined to divulge information that identifies which of the two staffers do not fit comfortably with the rest of the administration especially with the President Dr. Dawson.

“More than Dr. Dawson, this man we have as the Minister for Education continues to close his mouth on what’s going on at the college especially in the management environment. They have major issues, major constraints and he (Hon. Walwyn) all over the place blab blabbing in places he not supposed to have his nose in when the college, our only tertiary education institution in this Territory is suffering. They need stuff, money is a major challenge, they need the sitting of intelligent minds to work out issues and we are not hearing anything,” said a concerned lecturer.

He was supported by one student who said, “If we decide to take our issues to the Opposition for them to raise it in the House of Assembly it’s another problem… the problem will get bigger because the style of this government, and I am not a VIP nor NDP but I think this time I’ll I have to give Hon Fraser a chance, this government will spite things simply because it is being raised by the Opposition. Sorry to say that is just how this government especially with people like the Minister responsible for the college.”

While efforts failed in securing comments from both Hodges, Dr Dawson in an exclusive interview told this news site that the resignations of the two administrative personnel are not linked to each other’s reasons for their resignations. He said that while Dr Derry Hodge will be off the job officially sometime mid-November, Dr Christine D. Hodge will be official severing ties in December.

This news site understands that they were required to give at least three months notice.

Speaking to the concerns of the accreditation of the college which is due for March of 2015 Dr Dawson has assured that he does not foresee any challenges with the two officers being out of the system at the time. “A lot of the preparation for the accreditation visit next year in March is at an advanced stage and even with the next few weeks and the next couple of months certainly the Associate Vice President will still be on board to assist,” said Dr Dawson.

He added that what is entailed in preparing for the accreditation, one of the key things is the preparing of the report which will go something in January 2015. “While when you are going to lose someone at anytime it is going to have some effect, I certainly do not see it as having a delay or effect on our accreditation efforts.”

He said that while the resignations have been submitted to him and are public business, he does not feel too much at liberty to speak much about them. “I don’t think its stuff that can’t be talked about but I would prefer that the persons themselves would do that,” said Dr Dawson.

One of his biggest problem is he trying to destroy to many people, using his very own office (he forget who help him to get there) to achieve this in the name of getting another term to prove a point and save himself personal embarrassment

Dr Hodge is a wonderful person and a great lecturer. Sad to see that she is leaving. A teacher should know how to teach, a lawyer...should stick with law as he/she is not qualified to teach.

What nonsense you talking, it have those who don't know to teach right there in same positions for years and nothing being done about them ask the students.

Undermining that's not happening. Micromanagement is quite obvious but you dont want to say that because youre more than likely on of the cronies. Call a spade a spade.

He is out of his league because he is the authority on every thing except what he is supposed to be doing. A respectable leader of the college.

Dr. Hodge is an excellent educator , thats not her style of undermining others . The president and her are family . i believe it's the minister of education , he messed with our festival celebrations , our schools affairs and everything else . One man cannot run a country , he's out of control .

Book sense is not common sense. More degrees than a thermometer and as much common sense as a brown paper bag. That's what's killing the BVI. We have a bunch of educated fools trying to lead us where common sense counts. Everyone is caught up in their accolades as opposed to actually getting things done. It will never change until we change the way we look at how things ought to be done.

Why are you all blaming Myron. The college does not fall under Ministry of Education. It is a statutory body just like electricity, social security board ets. So they are ready to resign for whatever reason, Myron is not to blame. People just come on here and blog blaming the NDP for everything.

BVIEC also falls under Mark's Ministry, Financial Services falls under the Premier, but these entities, like the College, have a full board and executive that makes decisions. If they sit back and let a Minister rule them by doing things contrary to how it should be done then it's on them. I don't know the story of these people that are leaving but playing politics is sickening. We all know most people hate Myron because he is no punk. He is not afraid to make hard decisions like the others. This is why he outshines every other minister by miles. He's not afraid and he gets things done. You don't have to believe me, just look at the facts!

Look around the college; there are so many people there who claim to be God fearing yet there is so much wickedness in the place. Check how many offices are filled with obeah items and why there are so much evil spirits around. God is seeing and giving them long ropes to hang themselves.

Why would this be necessary? Why are the staff members so desperate that they would go to the media? Everyone knows that the College is a terrible mess! Why are the needs of the College, the place that so many of us who are young professional received our start being ignored? I heard someone say that the College has been sinking since Dr. Wheatley was forced out! Now those who need the skills that HLS can provide will suffer because of poor, spiteful leaders who are intimidated by brilliant minds like Dr. Derry! It is a shame that the "waste of timers" won't resign and let brighter, younger and more competent minds take the reins up there. Sad. Pat would be heartbroken.

Not sure what the fuss is about..Dr. Derry was special assistant to the president during Dr. Wheatley's tenure..he resigned that post and came back a few years later as dean. May be he will come back again. The lady is over seventy and fresh out of ideas..give a younger person a chance. These old people stay in office until they die and not make any meaningful contributions..BVI style

@BREAKING NEWS: You got it right. Bunch of Old employees with 1960 ideas and ideas from their great, great grandparents, which they are pushing down the throats of our young people. Time for young, brilliant minds to educate our youths and prepare them for running our country. There is a reason for retirement. Only the BVI doesn't get it.

One of the problems with the college is that most of the employees are working like crabs in a bucket. Employees try to pull each other down instead of working together to help the organization move forward. I use to work there and left because of this type of mentality.

I apologize for my wording, I think I used the wrong word... I should have said some not most... because not all the employees who work there are like that. There are plenty gems working at the college I can attest to that. I have moved on to another job as well as many other many other former employees. The crab in a bucket mentality to me seemed to stem from the working environment and the fact that people felt that at any point in time their job could be on the line.

I don't, know the ifs and wherefores of this latest situation but one of those leaving is in her seventies and looks as if she has been there longer than that..come on,,about time? Is her expertise one of a kind..is she double dipping...fresh ideas with promotions and new hirees spurs growth .
