During a post-match segment after the Big Bash clash between the Melbourne Renegades and the Adelaide Strikers on Monday McLaughlin slipped up and called Mark Waugh by Damien Fleming's name.

The Channel 10 journalist, Waugh, and fellow panel guest Kevin Pietersen all dissolved into laughter with McLaughlin apologising and joking: 'I'll buy you a drink'.

Social media was quick to respond to McLaughlin's comments, drawing parallels between her remarks and Chris Gayle's 'don't blush baby', gaffe earlier this month.

'So Mel McLaughling just offered to buy Mark Waugh a drink... he shouldn't be subject to that in a workplace #dontblushbaby #chrisgayle', Simon tweeted. 

'Did Mel McLaughling just tell Mark Waugh that she'd buy him a drink? This is a two way street Mel... #slipperlyslope', Tom posted.

Others took McLaughlin's side, pointing out the differences between the two interactions.

'It's not 'double standards' when women have been downtrodden since the dawn of time. How hard is that to get?' Conor wrote.

Another man asking people commenting on the remark made by McLaughlin tried to draw their attention to the context.

'I'm not exactly sure how Mel McLaughlin offering Mark Waugh a beer to patch up an argument is a double standard', Laurabee wrote.

Meantime Jamaican cricketer Chris Gayle, who has courted controversy for his behaviour around women while in Australia, has attracted attention for a different reason - this time matching a sporting record.

Gayle equaled the fastest half century hit in Twenty20 history while playing in the Big Bash League in Melbourne on Monday night.

The 36-year-old made the record breaking hit at Etihad Stadiumfor the Melbourne Renegades, but it wasn't enough for a win against the Adelaide Strikers. 

The big-hitting Jamaican player finally let his cricket do the talking after hitting the headlines numerous times during his Australian visit for behaviour some have labelled 'inappropriate' and 'sexist'. 

Gayle was fined $10,000 for 'inappropriate' and 'sexist' remarks toward Channel 10 reporter Mel McLaughlin while live on air. 

The 36-year-old later posted a picture of himself in a t-shirt that read 'sex sells' and later signed a fan's Frisbee with 'don't blush baby' - a comment he made towards Ms McLaughlin during a post-match interview.

In an interview with Channel 10 following the incident Ms McLaughlin said: 'I don't really want to be the subject of such conversations, I was just going about my business and doing my job, but it's definitely a good thing people are talking.' 

Three other female journalists also claimed they were made to feel uncomfortable by advances the player made on them in recent years, describing them as both 'creepy' and 'intimidating.'

But Gayle surprised the public with his smashing record that equaled the fastest half-century in Twenty20 cricket history.

The West Indian star made a slamming 51 runs off just 12 balls in Melbourne Renegades' Big Bash League clash with Adelaide Strikers. 

Gayle hit seven sixes - four in a row off the first over of his side's innings at the Etihad Stadium - to equal the record set by India's Yuvraj Singh in 2007 against England, in Durban.

He was later dismissed, caught behind by Tim Ludeman off the bowling of Travis Head, for 56 off just 17 balls at a strike rate of 329.41.

The Melbourne Renegades will not advance to the Big Bash League semi-finals, as they needed to reach Adelaide Strikers' target of 171 runs in 16 overs if they were to replace Sydney Thunder in fourth place on the ladder. Instead they fell to a 27-run defeat, despite Gayle's heroics.
